I actually never made my opinion on Walt Disney known the other night.

That was a conversation firmly exclusive to those afflicted by testosterone.

Ari sticks a Vampire Weekend track on (via the Alexa) and hums along while he waits for Ray's coffee machine to deliver the goods. He left her in bed this morning, smiling in her sleep, Greebo curled up behind the crook of her bent knees and the sun falling across both of them. He had planned to order in for brunch, since they're having such a lazy morning, but the breakfast burritos in London aren't all that. So instead he plans to caffeinate his bloodstream and bring something hot and sweet to wake Ray up.

Her apartment isn't how he imagined. He expected something more English, maybe: something with big Georgian sash windows, dark wood floors, antique rugs and piles upon piles of books. Instead, it's an ode to modernity. On reflection, this makes complete sense. He had been drawn to Ray's modern sensibilities, her refusal to let him pay for anything, her androgynous dress sense, her competence in business and her quiet reservation in social settings. Everything about her spoke in a measured tone. Maybe that's why her friends took him by surprise. He expected people like Evan (startup tech wunderkinds) and people like himself, the kind of personalities that thrive in boardrooms and stock markets. Ray had described the group before they left - actors, musicians, creative artsy types, she had said - but he thought she meant that as a description of their hobbies. Not their careers.

In a way, he envies that crowd and their ability to create. But while he respects their abilities, he came away from the dinner party with the distinct sense that he had not connected to them as he had hoped. Whether it was the mismatched interests, or a transatlantic failure to translate, he knew that Ray had been disappointed in the evening. So he's determined to make today a better day: he wants to explore London with her, see the area she grew up, visit her favourite haunts. The London Eye doesn't interest him; Tower Bridge can wait. He's in Ray's hometown, and he wants to be delighted the way she seemed to be when he took her to visit Walden Pond.
