"I'd like to see you try," Thomas replied.

Keshav ignored him for once. "Jakob, come with me and shine your phone light on the locks so I can open the gates."

"Yeah, Yakub," Matthew mocked.

Jacob also ignored him; he and Keshav walked right up to the towering gates. In the daytime the gates looked harmless and ordinary, but now in the looming winter dark the gates looked like they belonged in a graveyard.

Louisa thought that Jakob and Keshav were braveto be trying to open the gates; she herself was scared senseless when thelullaby had started playing and when she had come to the realisation that theywere alone in school.
