I drive to the kindergarten. Children are playing outside, ride the slide, swing and run. I smile when I see her dark hair with two braids and her dark eyes when she sees me and runs towards me. She looks like her dad.
"Mommy, Mommy!!!" she calls out and runs towards me. I lift her in my arms and kiss her on the cheek. "How were you?" I ask her, when she shrugs: "Okay. We ate pancakes, sang songs..." She continues when the teacher approaches us. "Hello Ms. Sainz." I shudder and smile slightly: "Hello. Vivi won't come in kindergarten for a month," I say. The teacher nods: "She told me you're going on vacation. She's really looking forward to spending some time as a family again. It must be awful when your husband travels so much. And this danger...you haven't been able to convince him to quit racing?" I don't know what to answer her. This is our story and none of her business.
I take Vivi's backpack: "Vivi is very happy to see daddy after a long time. Have a nice day." She gives me a gentle smile and says something else to my daughter, but my thoughts are already elsewhere.
When we get to the car, I put Vivi in the car seat, then I rush around the car and we drive to the airport.
Vivi chats the whole time, but I only answer her back briefly. I am going to see him again. We didn't end in an bad way, but still. Considering how Vivi looks like him, I have him in my sights all the time. I get a little sick when I drive into an empty parking lot and see that the plane is already waiting. "The plane!" Vivi exclaims, rushing to unbuckle her belt. "Hold on, I'll help you right away," I say and turn off the engine. I walk around the car and chat with Vivi when I hear a familiar voice: "Hola mis hermosas."
I turn around and see the love of my life.
"Daddy!!!!" Vivi exclaims, throwing herself into his arms. My heart is beating like the first time we met. I'm blushing. He is wearing a red Ferrari T-shirt and shorts. "Nessa are you okay?"
"Mommy!?"
I don't know how long they've been calling me. "Yeah, I'm fine," I smile slightly and continue, "all her things are in the trunk, she has sunscreen, swimsuits, allergy medicine in her backpack. Please don't forget to give them to her every morning after breakfast, you know that she gets hives if she's too exposed to the sun. She should stay in the shade, don't forget the hat and the hydration. I'll call you on Thursday night because on Friday she has den-"
"Calm down Nessa, I'm her dad, she's with me a lot of times. I know what she's allergic to, what she can eat and drink, what she doesn't like, when I have to change her clothes," he stops me. I look at Vivi who is staring at me. She is 4 years old, her parents split up when she was two and a half years old. Poor girl, it's not her fault. I sigh, "You're right, sorry. Just keep an eye on her, okay." I take Vivi out of his arms and hug her tightly: "Be good, obey daddy and grandparents. And watch out for the sun!" The girl nods. I kiss her on the cheek and put her on the floor. "You know you can join us anytime, right?" he says as I nod: "I know, but I have to be at work, they need me. And Vivi needs to spend some alone time with you."
"We're still family, Vanessa." I nod, tears beginning to form in my eyes: "They're waiting for you." Vivi hugs me again, then they turn and walk hand in hand towards the plane. A tear runs down my cheek. I smile as I watch them leave. Father and daughter, the same like two peas in a pod.
