He doesn't eat anymore, but he's on your mind as you chop an onion and mince the garlic, when they meet the hot oil and start to sizzle. Imagine him next to you while you stir them, as the garlic becomes fragrant and the onion transforms into something sweet. Maybe he'd look over your shoulder, rest his chin on it while you break up the beef or settle hands on your waist as you adjust the seasoning, smile when you feed him off the spoon and say, "It's delicious, Dean."

You should've cooked for him more when you had the chance, but someone else is sitting at your table tonight.

So many things you need to say, but you don't text him. You don't call. Those things - the apologies, the promises - they'll die with you, all but the one you send him in prayer:
