One Last Time

"Ellie?" Renae asks, running down the stairs. She's breathing heavily and almost runs into the teen girls back.

"Be careful Renae! I just got JJ down for his nap." Ellie said, putting a finger over her mouth.

"Sorry sorry." Renae says sheepishly.

It's been around 8 months since Seattle. It was rough coming home without Jesse, but it wasn't as rough for them as it was for Dina. She had lost her partner, and the father to her unborn child. She was depressed, not taking care of herself.

Ellie had realized that if they fixed up Renae's old house that they could resume living there, since it was so close to Jackson. They fixed it up, and baby proofed it before bringing Dina into the house. She was heavily pregnant and a shell of herself, but with the other two girls helping she slowly became her old self. She had her baby, and his name is JJ. He was named after the two strong men who died. He was very well behaved, and he loved spending time with his aunties while Dina would go to work in Jackson. That's where she currently was.

When they returned from Seattle, the girls had a difficult time going back to how things were before. Renae had to heal completely, which took months. Her wrist was sprained, and her leg was nearly broken. Those healed, but her hearing in the right ear never really came back.

Ellie had severe PTSD from what had happened to her. She had flashbacks often, and only Renae could calm her down. She tried her best to stay in a good mindset, but sometimes you could feel it slipping.

Renae on the other hand had severe night terrors. Sometimes they would be of her dead friends, sometimes of Joel. But they would get so bad that she would have to stay awake until her body forced her into sleeping. That sometimes took days.

The two girls struggled, and even at one point took a break from each other for a few weeks just to breathe. It was hard. But they came back together eventually.

Renae told Ellie about the Salt Lake Crew once they got back from their break. There was no need to keep it a secret anymore. Renae showed Ellie the ring hanging around her neck from Alissa, and explained what happened.

Ellie was upset, but understood in the end why she felt the way she did.

Now they were mostly back to normal, despite the frequent flashbacks and nightmares.

"What's up?" Ellie questioned the girl.

"One of the calf's escaped." Renae said.

"Damn it. I'll get it, you watch JJ." Ellie sighed as she ran out the door. Renae smiled lightly as she walked into the living room where JJ slept in his crib. Next to the crib were photos of the girls, Jesse and Dina, Dina and her sister, Renae and her old dog, and Ellie and Joel. Renae loved how her once empty home turned into a home full of love and family. She sat and watched the baby for a bit longer before he started to wake up. Her eyes widened as she knew what was about to happen.

JJ immediately started crying, with no remorse. Renae quickly picked him up and cradled him to her body to try and soothe him. "Shhhh it's okay baby, I'm here." Renae said quietly as she bounced up and down, trying to calm him down. Ellie walked in and instantly pouted.

"Is our little man upset?" She asked as she grabbed the baby from Renae. "I'll take him on a walk and gather the animals." Ellie said as she grabbed the swaddle to hold JJ as she walked around. Renae held a thumb up and kissed Ellie on the cheek.

"Just the cheek?" Ellie raised a brow.

"You're so needy." Renae said with a smile as she kissed Ellie on the lips.
