The birds outside chirped among themselves, creating a soft melody with the wind that rustled the autumn leaves off the tree. The sun wasn't high up yet, just barely making its way from where it had risen, the glow dim as the light blanket of clouds, that covered the entire sky, obstructed its shine.
Two weeks have passed Sunoo mused to himself, the book he had been reading laid on his lap forgotten as he sat there on the bench outside the little home his family had once upon a time rented for a few weeks for a family vacation. It was odd being there by himself, but then he could hardly blame anyone but himself for that. It had taken a lot to leave his family behind like that, he knew they didn't agree with his wishes, but he hadn't given them any other choice. Sunoo sighed as he leaned back on the bench, closing his eyes in an attempt to vanish the painful ache in his chest. It wasn't only because of his longing for his family he knew. But he refused to acknowledge the other reason.
"Hyung?"
Sunoo startled a little as a body sat beside his own. He turned to face the other boy, his smile slow to arrive but genuine as he tried to reassure his younger brother.
"Out here to read too Wonie?" Sunoo asked with a teasing smile, his eyes pointing to the book he could see on his lap.
Jungwon smiled back in return, more open than his own brother's and more innocent too in a way. Sunoo couldn't help but feel his heart get soothed with the presence of at least one member of his family.
"I thought the view was really pretty to waste. And I really missed being with you hyung!" Jungwon explained as he almost vibrated with the excitement of being with his brother.
At that Sunoo bit his cheeks to stop himself from reacting, a bitter feeling in his stomach making him feel the need to yet again lash out at the elders.
Yang Jungwon was the son of the first Luna of the Kingdom, a marriage that may not have been borne out of love but had the foundation of it all the same. Kim Sunoo was the son of the present Luna, and older than the first Luna's son at that, a scandal that had rocked the empire when it had been revealed. No love was lost between the brothers or anyone else in the family no matter the difference in parentage. But not all could accept it, especially not the people of the palace. It had all come to a head 12 years later when both kids had found themselves stranded in the middle of the river they had been playing at. The royal servants with them had decided to save the one they considered most important, even though it would have been easier to save the younger boy who was well within reach. They both had been saved in the end by their father who had come running at the scent of fear from his children. The King and the Luna had been worried and rightfully angry at the servants for the way they had handled the situation, but it had made one thing clear for everyone. When push came to shove it was the true heir, something they had started calling Sunoo at a young age, who would be put first. This didn't sit well with the Yang's, the pack having watched the boy and his life closely in fear of their own blood being mistreated after his mother's death. And so they had put forward a proposal. Since the child carried their last name they would willingly take responsibility for him, cutting any ties he may have to the throne, thereby pleasing the elders while also ensuring his safety in the future.
Sunoo smiled at his younger brother and threw an arm around him to pull him into his side in an embrace. Jungwon let himself be pulled easily, resting head on his brother's chest as he was held, wrapping his own arms around his waist. He could hear the beat of his hyung's heart against his ear and he smiled as he mumbled,
"I am glad you let me join you hyung."
Sunoo sighed as he let go of the book in his other hand and moved it to gently pat the head resting on his chest. He replied softly, his eyes resting on the leaves falling from the tree, scoffing a bit at the memory of the court meeting that had happened before they had brought in his brother,
