When everyone had arrived at the summer's-end church youth group barbecue, the pastor gathered the teenagers near the picnic tables and gave them the same warm welcome spiel as last year -- and as every year of the last decade or so.

The teens shared hidden grins and slid hands into their pockets and bags. This time around, their running joke had turned to conspiracy.

"I see the food is ready," the pastor said, the same phrase as always. "Let us pray."

Out came a dozen squirt guns, and they gleefully obeyed.
