Chapter 7: overwhelming guilt.

"Basil- He's- He's DEAD!"Kel shouted as he starts to tear up

"..what? Is this some kind of sick joke? there's no way..." Aubrey panics

'We need to call the ambulance!..but..they'll..they'll take aubrey..' Kel thought to himself as he starts to panic too. He tries to switch his attention to something else and not stare at Basil's body, and he sees Basil's Garden shears laying on the grass

Kel shakes his head

'what am i thinking?! why would i even think that?! but Aubrey..' kel looks at Aubrey.

"it's..all my..fault.. " Aubrey trembles as she falls to her knees.

"I..I killed Basil..THE basil that comforted me, THE basil that helped me, THE basil that..The Basil that..cared for me.."

"Aubrey, just breathe-"

"ITS NOT THAT EASY, KEL ." Aubrey snapped

"oh, i..i just wanted to..." Kel starts to tear up

 Kel looks back at Basil's body

"You're..scared and terrified, i know. People say we need to face the consequences when we've done something wrong. But..I.. I dont want you to go to Jail, Aubrey! Espescially if i was involved in it." Kel looks back at Aubrey with tears roling down his cheek as his voice starts to tremble

"Kel, I-" Said Aubrey as she starts to cry really hard. not only did she kill someone,

but she killed someone that was...

someone that was her best friend.

  "Aubrey...It's going to be okay. Everything's gonna be okay."

Aubrey cried in his arms for a few minutes as they start to smell Basil's rotting body.

"It's okay to let out you emotions, Aubrey. But first, we have something to take care of.." Kel stands up and looks at Basil's body. He hated the look of his unconscious face, as it kept reminding him of how he couldnt save him, how he was involved in killing him. You could say..Kel was guilty for killing him, even if it was indirectly.

"It looks like Mari forgot to fold and bring home her picnic blanket last time she was here..And she couldn't bring it back home later cause she locked herself in her room.." Kel walks over to the picnic blanket

"let's..carry Basil here.." Said Kel as his voice trembles a bit

"Wh-what? Kel..What are you planning..?" 

"Planning for you to not get to jail." 

They both carried Basil to the picnic blanket, they both hated it. They hated his cold body, his awful smell, his...his face. They hated the fact that how he looked right now, was because of themselves.

"so..what now..K-KEL?!" Aubrey shouted as she sees Kel pull out Basil's garden shears

"I'm sorry..I..I couldn't think of another way, I-" Kel starts to tear up again but he shakes his head to stop himself from crying

"gh..Basil..Why..Why did it have to turn out this way.." Aubrey covers her eyes as Kel stab Basil with his(Basil) own garden shears.

"Y'know..I just..realized something..How Mari was fated to die..maybe..We worded it wrong..." Said Aubrey, still covering her eyes

"What..? What do you mean by that..?"

"Maybe, one person in our friend group is always fated to die.., if Mari didnt die, then Basil did, if Basil didnt, then maybe..just maybe..someone else in our friend group would've died..."

Kel didnt say anything. There was only the sound of wind.

"Tell me, Kel. What did we do to the point we've been...somehow cursed?!.." Aubrey tears up

"Get yourself together Aubrey..There's..There's no way..."

 "But that doesnt matter now, what matters most is that, in OUR universe, in OUR timeline, I..I..I killed Basil." Said Aubrey as she turns around and starts to walk away

"Wait, Aubrey, I-" Kel tries to reach out to her, but gave up. He wanted to tell her that she's not the only one feeling guilty, but..Maybe she just wants to be left alone.

Kel and Aubrey both go home.

Kel changes his clothes then he tries to watch TV to try to forget what just happened. But it only made him remember more instead. The sound of the water splashing..Basil's bubbles in the lake..How much pain Basil felt..

 His thoughts kept running on and on about Basil. But it stopped when he hears someone open the door

"I'm home" Says Hero as he takes off his sandals

"sorry i came back more late than yesterday, Mari's..not in a very good state right now.. "

Silence.

'I'm sure everything's going to be better tomorrow' is..what you'd say, right, kel?"

"ah, of..Of course! I cant wait till Sunny gets out of the hospital tomorrow! I'm so excited!!" Says Kel as he tries to act as if nothing's wrong. 

"Ahah, Now that's the Kel i know!" Says Hero but he stopped for a second

"wait..did something happen? your nose..looks red..Have you been crying?"

"Whaat? nope, I just..got told by mom to cut some onions!"

"..Okay, then. If you need to talk, it's fine, i wont judge you, remember that."

"Yeah, ofcourse!" Says Kel as he goes to his room

"Yes, you would. You would judge me, Hero. You just dont know it.." Says Kel as he starts to cry in his bed.

"It's..it's all my fault.." Aubrey cries in her bed as she hears her parents arguing

"Why..why cant i do anything right...why, why, WHY!" Aubrey snapped as she grabs Basil's photo album from her drawer

"Everyone..Everyone looks so happy it's pathetic. pfft- Why would they even be friends with me? for all i know, i've been nothing but a burden." Says Aubrey as she starts to scribble their faces with black marker

"Now Basil's gone..My parents are fighting..and it's all.my.fault." Says Aubrey as she slowly snaps back

"wait..What am i doing..? Nononono, Their faces..They're all..scribbled..I scribbled..all of it..." Aubrey drops her marker

"No way..It really is true..I really cant do anything right.." Says Aubrey as she gets overflowed by guilt

Meanwhile, back in Kel and Hero's house 

Hero walks in and sees Kel sleeping, but his pillow is wet.

"Kel..I told you, you could talk to me anytime.." Hero sighs as he goes to bed

'I couldn't tell you..There's just no way..There's just no way i could tell you. You'd hate me. Like how Sunny and Mari would to. No one would see me as the same 'outgoing cheerful boy' ever again. It's weird, I feel like i'm both selfless and selfish. I act around people so they wont be worried about me, and yet..I dont want people to hate me after ....' Kel thought to himself, he was pretending to be asleep.

"I'm sorry, Hero. Not only for being a terrible friend to Basil, but a terrible brother."
