ElenaMy eyebrows furrowed as I walked around Whale of a Tale, Cousins Beach local bookstore. I don't know why I lied to Conrad and my brother earlier about having a date this afternoon. But the thought of Conrad going on a boat to hangout with Nicole irritated me.
The way Daniel and Conrad looked at me with pity as if I had no other plans than to hangout with the group of them, also pissed me off. Max was still asleep so I knew trying to get him up to hangout at this time of day was a no go. Shayla was hanging out with Steven from an earlier Instagram post I saw from her. I huffed in frustration thinking maybe the pity looks Daniel and Conrad gave me was justifiable, I didn't have anyone else.
"Well if it isn't my favorite black cat out here looking like a stray all alone," I heard a voice close behind me.
I turned around quickly, almost bumping into Jeremiah's chest. "El," he said, looking down at me grinning wide.
"Jeremiah Fisher," I emphasized every syllable in his name staring into his ocean blue eyes. They always screamed mischief, drawing me into them. It was one of the reasons I could never tell him no when we were kids and he wanted to do something reckless. How could I have forgotten about Jeremiah?
Jeremiah groaned and leaned down closer towards my face. My breath instantly hitched as my heart rate picked up from my nerves of him being so close. "I love when you say my full name. You don't do it often, why does Con get that privilege and I don't?" he joked.
I pushed his shoulder as he laughed, taking a step back. "Aren't we getting a little too old to continue on with these little flirtatious acts, Jeremiah?" I said, beginning to walk towards the next book aisle. It's something we have always done since we were young, flirt with each other but I never felt anything more for Jeremiah than a friend and the same went for him.
Jeremiah hustled quickly, catching up to walk beside me. He did a little spin and stood in front of me blocking my way from continuing to walk further. He laid his hand against the bookshelf and leaned slightly. I raised an eyebrow up at him as Jeremiah held his other hand up in surrender. "I thought you had a date, what are you doing here by yourself?" Jeremiah asked.
I scrunched up my eyebrows in confusion as I stared at him. Date? Then realization hit me. "Did Daniel tell you to spy on me?" I wanted to shout but resisted because we were inside the bookstore. "I'm going to kick his ass," I said as I began pulling out my phone from within my tote bag.
Jeremiah frantically began waving his hands in front of me trying to stop me from calling my twin. Staring at him with confusion, I said harshly, "what?"
He sighed and shook his head. "It wasn't Daniel that told me to check up on you so please don't call him," Jeremiah said in a panic.
"If Daniel didn't tell you, then," I stopped myself looking at Jeremiah. He gave me a small awkward smile. I furrowed my eyebrows. "Conrad? But why?" I asked.
Jeremiah shrugged his shoulders and ran his hand down his face releasing an exhausting sigh. "He didn't say but if I had to guess, because of his stupidity. You're well aware of that."
I nodded in agreement and said, "how did you or him even know I was here?"
"I didn't, this was the fourth place I checked. Him on the other hand, told me to check here first but of course, I didn't listen to him," he laughed.
"Of course," I said, mimicking him. I scrunched up my eyebrows in thought. How odd of Conrad to guess where I would be. Did he know all along I didn't actually have a date? My jaw clenched at that idea. Was I that predictable?
