White Horse
"Code blue on floor three." The intercom spoke out.
"She's flatlining again!"
"I pushed a milligram of Epinephrine!"
"Starting CPR! Somebody get the crash cart!"
The doctor in there pushed down on Dani's chest in a rhythm. Then they pumped oxygen into her nose and mouth. They beat on her chest, pumped oxygen, beat on her chest, and so on.
So many people started rushing around. More and more people seemed to fill Dani's room. I could only watch from outside as doctors tried to restart Dani's heart.
"Charging two hundred! Clear!"
Her body bounced up.
"Nothing. Again!"
"Charging two-fifty! Clear!"
Dani's chest jolted.
"Nothing. Three hundred!"
"Clear!" I couldn't watch. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Then I heard it. "We've got a pulse."
They slowly started cleaning up and clearing out. The doctor that had been leading and instructing came out to me. He had a small smile on his face, but I knew the news wouldn't be happy. Or as happy as I'd hope.
"I'm Dr. Rivers. I'll be Ms. Cruz's doctor."
An arm fell from the top of my head to shake the doctor's hand.
"Leah—"
"Williamson. Not a hard face to miss in a crowd." He chuckled.
"What happened? O—One minute she was—was fine, and the next she was collapsing. What's wrong?"
"She had a heart attack. I don't know why. I'll have to look at her files and I may have to run some tests. I'm going to have a nurse come bring you some paperwork to fill out for us, okay?"
"Yea—Yeah. I can do that. Am I allowed to go in? In and sit with her?"
"What's your relation to her besides teammate?"
"Fiancée."
"Of course. I'm going to go have a look at her files, call in some favors, and run some tests. I'll make sure she gets the best treatment possible."
"Thank you." He gave a smile then walked off. I walked into Dani's room. She was hooked up to a few machines and had oxygen running to her nose. I pulled a chair up and grabbed her hand. "You've got to pull through. I—I need you to pull through."
I couldn't believe I was sitting here though. I couldn't believe it. I couldn't believe it because she'd shown up a little over an hour ago, drunk and high. I had no idea where she'd been in the hours she was supposed to be at Katie's.
I sat for what felt like forever. I didn't know if I should've called someone. My mum, Katie, Lia, Beth...I didn't know. I didn't want to be alone, but I wanted to be alone as well.
Dani had been through so much and she'd put me through so much. We'd been through so much together. No matter what we'd been through, I knew I wanted a life with her. I wasn't sure what separated us. There was a divide in our relationship. There always had been. I was able to overlook it for so long, but now...but now I couldn't.
Something wasn't right and Dani had drug me along her crazy journey. I knew she loved me, but I questioned it at times. I didn't know why she fell back into the pit of hell again. I wanted to know and I wanted to understand, but I didn't. I didn't think I ever would. I knew this this issue ran deeper than her dad reentering her life.
