Ain't Met Us Yet

Two Years Later

"This was supposed to be a romantic getaway, you know?"

I sat up on my elbow and looked into those eyes.

"I thought I was doing a good job at making it romantic." That smirk. "We are still in bed." My hair was pushed back as we laughed together. I leaned down and pressed my lips onto hers. "I love you, Le. I'm sorry it took us so long to be here."

"Well," I put our hands together. "We made it."

"I never thought I'd get married."

"Danielle—Dani—Williamson." Her storm eyes were a light grey. "How are you feeling?"

"Le," she pushed my shoulders back and down onto the bed. Dani straddled my hips and put her hands on my chest. "I'm healthy. For real this time." She pulled my hand up to her heart. "You feel that, right?"

The blood flowing through her heart.

I sat up and laid my against her chest.

I could hear her heartbeat.

I looked into her eyes. She held my face in her hands. "You saved my life, Leah Williamson. You saved my life while I made yours hell for so long. And we've started over before—"

"No we didn't. We started where it broke." I kissed her chin. "After your surgery, you spent your time healing and finding yourself. So did I. And somewhere between it all...It all led back to you."

"It all led back to you." She leaned down and kissed me hard. I gripped her hips. "What time do we need to...to call your mom?" She asked between our kisses.

"An hour."

"Let's make use of the hour then." She pushed me down. I was forever in love with the wonder of Danielle Cruz.

Well, now Danielle Williamson.

Dani and I were laying comfortably in a hammock out on the porch of the rental we were in. She was lying on top of me with her shirt halfway up her back. I was lightly scratching her back and giving her small kisses on the head.

We'd been through hell. Hell that we were both certain was over.

Two years ago almost to the day, Dani had a heart attack on the sideline. I watched alongside the crowd of fifty-thousand as Dani died there. The game was called off and people were sent home, worried and panicked about a crowd favorite.

I found myself in the hospital and I learned Dani was undergoing immediate heart surgery. She needed a transplant and there was no other heart. That was until someone came in pronounced dead, but his heart was still good, and he was a match for Dani.

Eight hours later, Dani was alive and treatment plans were already being made for her. I was so scared she'd die that I had to leave. I left her a note and told her to find herself and I'd find me, and we'd one day meet in the middle. She texted me a few days later saying:

It all leads back to you.

And sure enough it did.

We met again, started over as friends. I asked her out on a date and then she proposed to me five months later. We planned our wedding in London and got married a few months later.

We talked about having a family and what it would look like for us. Too worried about time off for me, we ruled it out. Too worried about Dani's heart, we ruled it out. We went with adoption and now we were getting ready to legally adopt our little girl in a month.

Dani started working alongside Jonas as a coach now too. It felt nice still having Dani in a work environment.

But we needed this vacation first.

I felt a kiss on my jaw. "Stop thinking about her. She's safe with," she yawned "our family."

"Are you not worried?"

"Of course I am. But I'm on vacation with my wife and away from my job." She kissed my cheek. "Now, enjoy time with me."

"I am." I kissed her head. "I love you endlessly."

"I love you forever."

I grinned. "It means the same thing."

It all leads back to her after all.
