𝗖𝗛𝗔𝗣𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝟮𝟲 | 𝗜𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥𝗟𝗨𝗗𝗘 - 𝗠𝗢𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗥 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪𝗦 𝗕𝗘𝗦𝗧

Lynn was always closer to her dad, but that didn't mean Rita didn't know her daughter well. She could read that girl from a mile away, and if she thought she was gonna miss this little development, her little girl had a lot coming for her.

It was obvious a change had occurred in her Lynn, she just didn't know what.

The switch in behavior, the constant day-dreaming, the going out at odd hours; everything was screaming suspicious to Rita, and she hadn't the slightest clue on what the hell was going on with her daughter.

Until that girl started coming over more often, and a switch flicked off in Rita's brain. She liked to think she knew before even they did, because her daughter wore her heart on her sleeve, despite how much she liked to pretend she was this emotionless void.

...

"Hi," she said, standing stiff by the door when she realized she'd been caught. "Sorry for coming by unannounced but-"

"Oh," Rita called her name out warmly and beckoned her in. "Don't worry about it! As far as I'm aware, you made yourself comfortable in this house a long time ago. We're used to having you around at this point."

When she first started catching wind of Lynn's new "work-out buddy", she didn't think much of it. When she found out that said buddy was actually the girl who fought her daughter and got her stuck in detention, she was a bit less than thrilled.

Even less so when she heard all these stories from her other children about this girl being bad news.

Seriously, criminal behavior? Vandalism? Violent tendencies, gang affiliation? Rita kept her chill when she scolded Lynn for her detention, but internally she was considering reporting this to the police, because who on earth was this danger to society that had infiltrated her children's school?

But the girl didn't stop there, oh no! She also had the guts to infiltrate their home when Rita wasn't around. Twice!

She didn't care how much her husband spoke highly of her, nor did she care that Lynn had actually began kindling a friendship with her. If she saw that hoodlum doing anything less than orderly around her kids, she was going straight to the principal of their school, demanding this ruffian should be relocated.

Rita was a respectful and understanding citizen second, a mother first.

She didn't want her kids hanging around these types of people, much less getting into trouble with them. That's why when Lynn came home one day all sad and distant, talking about needing some rest and being mostly unresponsive, she knew she had to put a stop to it there.

Her kids had all her support, but this strange friendship Lynn had started with this punk was harmful, and it needed to be put to rest.

She had planned on confronting her then and there, already preparing her speech during movie night. Rita had a list, and she would waste no time trying to sugar coat it. Lynn needed to let the girl go before she started actually starting trouble in their lives.

But then the girl in question showed up.

It was the first time she saw her face to face, and to be honest, all her previous thoughts about the girl vanished.

She looked so small in her Lynn's arms, and the wet bloody footprints that followed the two made her heart stop. She knew that she logically should've called the police, told Lynn to get the little degenerate out of her home as she was clearly unsafe and needed to be taken somewhere else.

But as she said, Rita was a mother first, and this little girl was so obviously in need of one.

Their initial talk was short. Lynn Sr, her husband, was running around trying to get their other kids in check, and her daughter was doing the best she could to help her friend. Rita didn't know too much about the girl's home situation or anything, but the way she bowed her head and shook even in the dry clothes were telltale signs only a mother could sense.

The next day, she got to see more of the girl's real personality. And as it stood, when the girl wasn't shivering with her clammy hands and worn down eyes, Rita absolutely believed she was a true delinquent at heart. The way she carried herself and joked around and avoided help and consultation was all very familiar, but despite that, she was also surprisingly kind.

That was definitely a first. Maybe her daughter's friend only felt in debt to them, but she treated them kindly and helped out as best she could, so Rita was happy.

She shut the door behind her, smiling when the girl took off her shoes. "Sorry about the mess! The kids are all haywire and my husband has gone god knows where," Rita brushed the flour off her apron. "Lynn is outside preparing some obstacle course if I remember correctly. You can go right ahead outside if you want."

"Right," the girl briefly smiled and held a look in her eye at the mention of Lynn and, oh, that would absolutely be something Rita could file in for later. "Uh, actually, I came because I heard you were doing some mother's day thing and I just wanted to- oh what the fuck," she lost her confidence and whispered to herself, tightening her grasp on the bag Rita just noticed she was holding in her hand.

That was another reason she liked the girl. Rita always enjoyed a good book every once in a while, but not for the story, or the thrill, or the escape to another world (although that was always appreciated), but rather for the characters. She did believe everyone had more than what first met the eye, and this girl was a prime example of that.
