Facts

The sacraments in the Catholic Church are:

1. Baptism

• First and most important sacrament
• This is how one is accepted into the communion of the Church
• Fellowship with Jesus Christ

2. Eucharist

• In commemoration of the Last Supper, Christ’s death and resurrection
• Central component of Catholic worship
• Christ is in the bread/wine

3.Confirmation

• Confirmation of faith, belonging to the Church
• Receiving “the gift of God, the Holy Spirit”

4. Sacrament of Penance (Confession)

• Affirms turning away from sin
• An integral part of the Christian life
• Repent of guilt, confess to the priest, do penance

- The duties (penance) the priest gives you after confession, which must be fulfilled, then your sins are forgiven. They are an act of humility towards God, it shows that you have understood that you should not commit this sin again and that you regret having done so.

5. Sacrament of Marriage

• Makes visible the irrevocable love of God
• "God has made marriage an image of His love for us. He blesses and sanctifies the love of man and woman and makes their bond indissoluble, just as his love for us is irrevocable”, says the Liturgy of the Wedding.
• Bride and groom declare that they want to conduct their marriage in faith in God.
• In the wedding service, God’s blessing and protection are given to the bride and groom.

6. Sacrament of Consecration

Consecration is performed by laying on of hands, prayer etc.
Is performed by deacon, presbyter or bishop.
In a consecration, the worldly is permanently withdrawn and the person/object is consecrated to God.

The deacon (Greek: "servant") is the first and lowest level of the priesthood. He renders a service to the priest or bishop. He can't perform a sacrament.

The presbyter (Greek for "elder") or priest is the middle level of the priesthood. He may, with the blessing of the incumbent bishop, perform all the sacraments except priestly ordination.

The bishop (Greek for overseer) was appointed by the Apostles to strengthen the faithful in a city or region. The region under the incumbent bishop is called a diocese. Within his diocese, the Bishop appoints deacons and priests for service in the various Churches. He can perform all the sacraments including the laying on of hands of deacons and presbyters. Episcopal ordination may be carried out jointly by three or, in certain exceptions, by two acting bishops.

7. Anointing of the Sick

• Priest lays hands on the sick
• Anoint him with oil
• Speaks of the salvation of Christ and frees him from his sins
• Gives strength, relief and confidence in Christ

2. Myron Anointing (Confirmation, see also Catholic Church)

Myron (chrisam) is a special oil prepared and blessed by a church leader.
The Bishops are the successors of the Apostles and bear the consecration of the Apostles upon themselves. Thus the anointing of Myron is in essence the same as the laying on of hands at the time of the apostles.
In the Orthodox Church, the anointing of Myron occurs immediately after baptism.
