Y/n slowly opened his eyes, taking a second to adjust to the total darkness around him.

He had died, hadn't he? Was this the afterlife? Kinda... Bleak.

Someone stepped forward. Just out of Y/n's sight.

Y/n glanced around once again. Hoping for anything.

A... Person?

The darkness bent around them. Acting as a sort of clothing. One half of their hair was white, the other black and two large wolf ears sat atop his head.

"Hello, child..." The man said, offering a kind smile "You're here sooner than we would have liked..." he looked off to the side, thinking about something.

"Are you god?" Y/n couldn't help but ask, getting a chuckle from the man.

"No, my boy. I'm not." He shook his head. "Names have lost meaning here. But if you wish, you may call me Divinity." he bowed slightly.

"..." Y/n squinted. For someone who claimed not to be god, that was an awfully god-like name.

"Where are we?" He asked, looking down, but like everywhere else, all he saw was darkness.

"This, my boy, is the shadow."

Real informative. "Yeah, why am I here? Pretty sure I had died back there..."

"Hm, yes, you did." he confirmed nonchalantly. "Or are about to."

"Why am I here then? Is the shadow where people who die go to?" He couldn't imagine spending his life here.

"Close my boy." He shook his head. "instead, it's where those chosen by the shadow go when they die."

"Chosen?" Y/n asked, eyebrow raised.

"Yes. Chosen." Divinity nodded. "You see, when a person is given the shadow, the shadow decides whether or not it's worth of becoming part of it. Thus, why you are here."

"I don't remember ever being given the shadows..." Y/n trailed off as he thought it over.

"You're mother gave it up before she died. Effectively losing her chance to join the shadows. But instead gave you the chance to join instead." Divinity said with a roll of his eyes.

"A waste if you ask me." Someone says. Causing Y/n to whip around.

"Don't mind that my boy. It's just another shadow. Not something you need to worry about."Divinity shook his head.

Y/n nodded slowly.

"Anyway." Divinity shook slightly. "I believe it's best if I give you an... Offer of sorts."

"What do you mean?"

"Well, you see," Divinity started. As some shadow parted behind him into a view of the outside world. Where Maki held onto a slumped Y/n's clothing. "I'm fairly certain you wish to protect her, correct? To live?"

"Isn't that what everyone wants? To live and protect those around them?"

"You're right there my boy!" Divinity "That's what it means to be alive!" he chuckled.

"So how about a deal of sorts?"

Y/n narrowed his eyes. What could he really lose? His life sucked. But with this, if this weird guy isn't lying, he could protect Maki. That would mean he was strong, right?

"What do you have in mind?" Y/n asked after some silence.

Divinty's smile grew predatory.

"Let's make a binding vow..." Divinity closed his eyes. "Well, two." He corrected himself.
