VENEER POV
After finally getting Velvet settled and ensuring everything was ready for her birthday celebration, Veneer knew the next mission was to pick up the cakes without attracting too much attention. Sporting a casual disguise – sunglasses, a hat, and a hoodie – he made his way to Serene Sweetscape.
As he entered the bakery, he noticed Jay, the baker who created Velvet's cake, emerging from the back. They took deep breaths, seemingly calming themselves. Veneer observed, his thoughts involuntarily drifting into, "He's so cute... Wait, no—"
Trying to dismiss the fleeting notion, Veneer focused on the cakes. They then approached him with a warm smile, introducing himself, "Hi, I'm Jay. I handled the cakes for you. Are you 'V'?"
Veneer couldn't help but smile back, "Yeah, that's me. 'V.' Thanks for handling this."
As Jay unveiled the cakes, showcasing the lavender, white, and lime green masterpiece for Velvet, Veneer's eyes widened in sheer delight. Unable to contain his excitement, he exclaimed, "Oh my god, I love you and these cakes!"
Jay blushed, caught off guard by Veneer's exuberant response. Nervously, they stammered, "Th-thank you! I'm glad you like them. It was a pleasure working on the cakes for Velvet's birthday."
Veneer chuckled, enjoying Jay's flustered reaction. "No, seriously, you're amazing at this. Velvet's gonna love these. Uh, sorry if I sound a bit over the top."
Jay smiled, their heart pounding a bit faster. "No need to apologize. It's always great to hear someone appreciate the work."
Veneer leaned in, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Well, you've got a fan in me, Jay."
The compliment sent a surge of warmth through Jay, and they chuckled nervously, "Th-that means a lot, thank you."
As they continued chatting, Veneer couldn't help but notice Jay's nervous energy. Wanting to ease the tension, he asked, "So, how did you get into baking? It seems like you really enjoy it."
Jay's eyes lit up, the blush fading as they shared their passion. "I've always loved creating things, and baking lets me combine art and flavor. Plus, making people happy with something I've crafted is incredibly rewarding."
