Took Away My Smile

"You have the most beautiful smile."

That's what she would always tell me

That I looked so...so happy

Always gleaming in her presence

As we'd spend more and more time together

Getting to know each other

Lost in one another's presences

Things were so great at first

I couldn't get enough

Always honouring her with that same smile

It was the best thing I ever experienced

But things eventually feel apart between us

Slowly but surely

She started noticing my moods change

That I was down

And didn't share that same radiating energy

"You're not smiling for me anymore," she would start to express.

"I'm trying," I'd reply.

But it was becoming harder and harder

To simply lift my lips upward

Putting on a happy expression

And giving her that smile she began to slowly miss

More time went on

We started slowly fading away

Like the mist on the morning lawn

After a hard nightfall of rain

Gradually evaporating into the sky

I tried seeing her one last time

To see if we could possibly work it

All the beautiful memories we'd made

Everything we went through together

But she didn't feel the same anymore

"You never smile anymore," she told me.

"I've tried to make you happy, but only you can do that for yourself," she continued.

That was the last time I ever saw her

And that once beautiful smile

Was replaced with an irreversible frown

Because the drugs and alcohol took away my smile
