GWEN WALKED INTO HER HOUSE, IT WAS EMPTY. where was everyone? she didn't know. she had no idea. all she knew was she needed to get some sleep.

"what the hell is going on.." she whispered to herself as she walked to her room, passing out in her bed almost immediately as she walked into the room.

joey, however, in her own room at her own house, was just sat up thinking about gwen and her brother. and how she'd gotten mad at gwen, but she really just seemed happy. "what was i thinking getting mad at her." she muttered to herself in her dark bedroom, "okay wait." she got out of bed and ran across the hall, knocking on steve's door

"what's up bug?" he asked, opening up the door

"i have a question." she told her brother, who was standing in his doorway with a hand on his hip
"what's up joe?"
"do you like gwen?"
"what? where would you get that idea?"
"you don't?"
"well.. i don't know."
"well, if you do, i'll play matchmaker, i'll get you guys together."
"aren't you mad at her right now? also, no way in hell she likes me. that girl hates me."
"i was mad at her, then i realized i was being so stupid, so i changed my mind! and i wouldn't be so sure about that?"
"what? joey what does that mean?"

"goodnight!" she smiled before running off back to her own bedroom, leaving steve confused and wondering.

"DUSTIN!" joey heard through the walkie talkie as her, dustin, steve, and gwen took buckets of meat out of the trunk, "this is lucas. do you copy? dustin?"

"hey lucas!" joey replied into the walkie, "boy do we have a story for you!"

"well, well, well." dustin said, "look who it is."
"sorry man. my stupid sister turned it off."
"well, when you were having sister problems, dart grew again. he escaped, and i'm pretty sure he's a baby demogorgon."
"wait, what?"
"i'll explain later just meet us at the old junkyard."
"who's 'us'"
"me, joey, steve, and gwen."
"steve?"
"and bring your np binoculars and wrist rocket."
"steve harrington?"

"yes lucas, my brother." joey told him, saying it slowly like she would if she were talking to a kid just learning to read

"all right, let's go." steve said, shutting the car trunk

"just be there stat, over and out." dustin said to lucas as they started towards the junk yard

JOEY WALKED WITH HER ARMS CROSSED as she listened to dustin go on and on about how he wanted to impress max.

"okay, so let me get this straight." steve started, "you kept something you knew was probably dangerous in order to impress a girl who... who you just met?"

"also, a girl who did not care about it when you showed her, by the way!" joey said, everyone giving her a weird look wondering why she sounded so angry about it

"all right, but steve that's grossly over simplifying things. and joey, who wouldn't like it?" dustin asked
"normal people."

"i mean, why would a girl like some nasty slug anyway?" steve asked
"an interdimensional slug? because it's awesome."

"not when it screams in your face." joey said flatly, and in more of a whisper

"well, even if she thought it was cool," steve began once more, "which she didn't, i... i just... i don't know. i just feel like you're trying way too hard."
"well, mor everyone can have your perfect hair alright?"
"it's not about the hair, man. the key to girls is just... just acting like you don't care."
"even if you do?"
"yeah, exactly. it drives them nuts."

"don't listen to him dustin, girls want someone who cares." gwen told the boy, "if you act uninterest we will automatically think you're uninterested."

"i'm not sure about that." steve said
"you're not a girl?"
"but i know a lot of things about girls."
"not as much as an actual.. girl?"

"well, now i, confused." dustin said

"don't listen to gwen." steve told him

"alright." the girl said, rolling her eyes

"goodness steve you're so stupid." joey told him, "learn some listening skills please."

the rest of the walk to the junkyard was pretty quiet, minus some random conversing here and there.

"finally, it feels like we've been walking for ages and a half." joey said, putting down her meat bucket, "this thing is heavy."

"oh yeah. yeah, this'll do." steve said, walking further into the junk yard, "this'll do just fine. good call dude."

the four of them each poured the rest of the meat out of their buckets, when they heard lucas yell, "i said medium well!" they looked up and saw him.. but he wasn't alone. he was with max.

"who's that?" steve asked

"max!" joey exclaimed happily, accidentally tripping over her now empty bucket, and tumbling into the grass

"jesus joe, how are you always falling?" max asked, reaching her hand out to her, helping her up

"hey so leave me alone." she said, laughing softly, "also, did lucas tell you everything?"
"yeah, i'm still deciding if i believe it or not."
"well, believe it. it's true."
"okay, i believe you."

"you believe her immediately but you were still unsure when i told you everything?" lucas asked

"yeah, i like her better." max told him, making joey smile

"listen dustin, i'm not sure you have much of a chance." steve whispered to the boy, seeing how the red head and his sister looked at each other and acted around each other
"what? why not?"
"uhhh.. no uh, no reason.
