I sat there in complete silence, too shocked by the news to say anything. I shouldn't have been so surprised, since I knew my sister was a lying bitch, but hearing that she wasn't pregnant after she so brazenly announced it in front of my husband and his family was astonishing.

"How are you sure she's not with child?" I asked my husband, curious to know why he was so convinced. I knew that all it would take to know would be a pregnancy test, but I also knew my sister wouldn't willingly do it.

"I had her blood taken for testing."

"And she agreed?"

"I didn't tell her I would do a pregnancy test, cause she would throw a tantrum, so I only told her it was necessary for me to know if she's healthy. You'd be surprised how easy it is to persuade her to do what I want. I just waved a credit card in front of her and she almost begged for the doctors to check her."

"You forget she's my sister. I've known her since she was born. Nothing she does will surprise me," I chuckled bitterly. I've been living with that little cunt for eighteen years and I knew exactly what she was like, so it wasn't much of a surprise to know she gave up her dignity for money. She was her momma's little girl, so she was just as materialistic as her too.

"Really? Then I guess you won't be surprised when I tell you that the man with whom she cheated on me was none other than my cousin," my husband chuckled dryly. He was right, I wasn't surprised.

"I have a suspicion she did it for a very specific reason."

"She did, but when her plan failed, she came back to me and begged for forgiveness. She kept making excuses that she was drunk and so on."

"So why did you forgive her?" I asked curiously. I would've never forgiven someone for betraying me.

My husband only sighed deeply, seemingly unwilling to share his secrets. I didn't need to know them, to be honest, so I assured him, "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to. I was just curious, as I'm not someone who would forgive a traitor and a cheater. Forgive me if I was being intrusive."

"It's not like that, I don't mind telling you, but I'm not sure how you'll take it."

That was strange. I didn't like the way he phrased it.

Before I could stop him, he continued, "Unlike my parents, who are quite open-minded, my grandfather is a really conservative person. He believed that family is the foundation of everything, be it business or life. Around a year ago, he decided to give over his company shares, but he set a condition. The shares will be given to his first great-grandchild. Since my grandfather has only two grandkids, I mean my cousin and me, he also told us that the child has to be legitimate. Which means..." he paused momentarily.

"It has to be born during marriage," I finished. That was why he was adamant about getting married, even though my sister had cheated on him before. However, that didn't mean I liked what I heard, so I added, "I hope you don't expect me to give you that child..."

My husband stayed quiet for a while, contemplating his answer. He then shook his head in defeat and turned to me with a sullen look. "I know."

"If you don't mind me asking, why do you need your grandfather's shares so much?"

"As you know, I'm now the CEO of the company, but my position is not as secure as you might think. My cousin has almost as many shares as me, so if he got those that now belong to my grandfather, he could overthrow me and take the company."

"So that's how it is." I understood then why he was the way he was. He was in danger of being dethroned so he tried to fulfill his grandfather's wish. Marriage was the first step. It was unfortunate that he married me instead of my sister, because she would gladly give him a child. It would set her up for life if she did that. That was also why she lied about being pregnant even though she wasn't.
