"Time is your greatest enemy. Phase one of the mission will be a low level attacking of two plane teams. You'll fly along this narrow canyon to your target. Radar guided surface area missiles defend the canyon, these SAMS are lethal. But they were designed to protect the skies above, not the canyon below." Mav tells us all "That's because the enemy knows no one is insane enough to try and fly below them." Rooster says "That's exactly what we are going to do. On the day, your altitude will be 100 feet, maximum. You exceed this altitude, radar will spot you and you're dead. Your air speed will be 660 knots, minimum. Time to target, 2 and a half minutes. That's because 5th generation fighters wait at an air base nearby. In a head to head with these planes in your F-18's, you're dead. That's why you need to get in, hit your target, and get out before the planes even have a chance of catching you. This makes time your greatest adversary" maverick tells us all "So today we're gonna take it easy on you. Max ceiling, 300 feet. Time to target, 3 minutes." Maverick says "Good luck." He adds
Phoenix, Bob, and coyote just went and ended up failing "Why are they dead?" Maverick asks coyote "We broke the 300 ft ceiling and a SAM took us out." Phoenix answers "No, why are they dead?" He asks coyote again "I told them I was speeding up but my aircraft malfunctioned." He answers "One that they would accept at the funeral" Maverick says "No sir" coyote says looking down "Why didn't you anticipate the turn? You were briefed on this terrain." He asks Phoenix "Don't tell me, tell it to his family." Maverick tells her nodding to Bob Next was Hangman, Payback, and Fanboy. "What happened?" Maverick asked hangman "Well I flew as fast as I could, kind of like my ass depended on it." Hangman said "And, you put your team in danger and your wingman's dead." Rooster added "They couldn't keep up." Hangman smirks
Now it was my turn "Alright boys we're making this one" I tell them as we start to fly "Alright speeds good 1 second ahead of target" fanboy tells me We were flying through making every turn. It was our last turn before we had completed it "Last turn boys this one is tight" I tell them I make my turn with the boys right behind me. "Increase speed 100 knots" I tell them as we come out of the last turn. "Whooo!!" Fanboy cheers as we make it across in time. "Hell yeah" I say letting out a big sigh "We did it boys good job" I tell them after I caught my breath.
Next was Rooster's group. They made it alive but they were a minute behind schedule "Why are you dead?" Maverick asks "Your team leader up there, why are you, why is your team dead?" He adds "Sir, he still made it to the target." I tell him trying to defend rooster "Yeah and a minute late, he gave enemy aircraft time to shoot him down, so now he's dead." Mav tells us "You don't know that." Rooster says "You're not flying fast enough. You don't have a second to waste." Hangman tells him "We made it to the target." Rooster says "And superior, enemy aircraft intercepted you on your way out." Maverick shoots back "Then it's a dog fight." Rooster says "Against fifth generation fighters?" Mav asks "Yeah we still have a chance." Rooster tells him "In an F-18?!" Mav asks raising his voice "It's not the plane sir, it's the pilot." Rooster tells him "Exactly!" Mav yells I see rooster suck in a breath "There is more than one way to fly this mission" he tells him "You really don't get it. In this mission, a man flies like Maverick here, or a man does not come back. No offense, Lieutenants" He nods at Phoenix and I "Yet somehow, you always manage." Bob mumbles "Oh shut up" I roll my eyes at hangman "I'm just saying, We're going into combat. On a level no living pilot has ever seen. Not even Maverick. It's no time to be thinking about the past." He says smirking at Rooster. "What's that supposed to mean?" Rooster asks him "I can't be the only one that knows Maverick flew with his old man." Hangman starts to say "Okay that's enough." Mav tells him "And that Maverick was flying when his old man-" hangman says but Rooster runs toward him. Everyone started to pull them apart "That's enough!" Mav yells "You son of a bitch!" Rooster yells at him "Hey, I'm cool, I'm cool....You know I'm right." Hangman says to Maverick as he walks off "I won't even get started on your whole back story" hangman laughs as he walks past me And that's what sent me over the edge "Hey hangman" I say and he turns around "Wha-" he starts to say but I punch him in the face Everyone runs to me holding me back and hangman as he try's to get up to go at me. "Enough!!" Maverick yells "You're all dismissed." Maverick says and I walk past hangman giving him a death glare
I walk up to the top of the building where rooster and I hung out the other day. I finally make it up there to see him already sitting down
Once I get there I quickly embrace him in a hug. I hear him choke back some tears "Hey rooster listen to me. Listen to me. It's ok. Don't let hangman get to you alright? You're so strong. You're one of the strongest people I know. Ok?" I tell him After a few minutes he let go. "Thank you T" he smiles "Anytime Rue" I smile "I won't lie though that punch felt pretty good" I laugh "Man I wish I could have done it" he says as we sit there laughing for a bit before I speak up
"Now how about we go get some ice cream and watch a movie?" I ask him "Sounds like a great plan" he smiles at me
