Sokka and Kya had been brought up together. They were born 3 days apart, did everything together from when they were old enough to walk, got pretend married at 9. They were each others's everything. The best of friends. But when the pair were ten, the fire nation took that away from them. The raids on their village took Kya's parents and Sokka's mother. On that day, everything changed. Not only did the catastrophe cause loss of lives, wounds, pain, and terror, but it changed Sokka and Kya as people, especially to one another.
Sokka tried his hardest to make sure Kya was okay, but she felt so much rage and anger about the loss of her parents that she couldn't take out on the fire nation, and took it out toward everyone else, especially Sokka.
Kya envied Sokka and Katara. They mightn't have their parents, but they had each other. Kya thought she had nobody, and she pushed everyone away until she did.
