Katherine stopped believing in God a long time ago.
When her mom was diagnosed with brain cancer. Before dying two months later, yeah that pissed Katherine off. Or when a year after that when her daddy finally got out of his depression, he went for a walk around the park. Where he was mugged and shot. Two funerals, for the most important people in her life, all within a year, nearly broke her.
What really pissed her off, was when God sat back in his chair, and laughed at the whole of humanity. Said a big FUCK YOU!! To everyone, children, the elderly, the poor, the rich. He reminded everyone that they are nothing. Then he brings back the dead. Except they weren't the family people lost, Katherine wouldn't get the opportunity to see her parents and in some sick way she was nearly glad they died when they did because she couldn't handle seeing them be ripped apart by those things.
But just when she began to think life was pointless, she met a group of survivors, who would eventually be more family than strangers. They wouldn't just survive together, they would thrive.
So yeah, Katherine stopped believing in God but she began believing in them.
