A fond memory

Smiling, there was a lot of that.
The sun would hold us in its embrace while we gazed out in jubilation.
It was a joy that was given to us for merely being new to this life
And it all seemed never-ending at that moment
But that was all it was ever meant to be.
A moment in time...

Soon our joy grew older, became disfigured and descended into a newfound sorrow.
Soon my deep confidence in you became so brittle I feared it would snap
And the solace you found in me felt warier, as though I too was a foe
Lost in our own battles, we let go of each other's hands.
Filled with too much pain
 We would reach out
But turn away

I see you walking beyond the confines of my wall,
and though years have passed I still feel the remnants of what was.
Old friend-
I remember those moments
