DOCTOR WHO
LOYALTIES UNDONE
WRITTEN BY ASH HOLLOWAY
In the TARDIS:
The Doctor: Barbara, are you alright?
Barbara: Do not speak to me.
The Doctor: Ms Wright?
She points at him.
Barbara: You helped create the machine! The machine that nearly killed me!
The Doctor: Barbara, I didn't know that The Daleks were going to test it on you.
Barbara: You still helped them!
The Doctor: I had no choice!
Barbara: You had every choice! Your The Doctor, but yet you don't actually save anyone-
The Doctor: I'll have you know t-
Barbara: Two years I was locked in that cell for, I had no one else to speak to other than two Daleks.
The Doctor: I'm sorry.
Barbara: I know you are & I'm glad that for once you have recognised your mistakes.
Robert: So... back to 2023?
The Doctor: I don't see why not try the fast return switch once more.
Barbara: As long as we don't run into anymore Daleks.
The Doctor flicks the switch, the TARDIS begins to materialise.
Ian: Doctor! Stop!
The Doctor: I'm sorry?
Ian: Remember what happened last time you pressed that?
The Doctor: We landed upon Skaro, hm yes.
He pulls a switch.
Robert: What are you doing?!
Barbara: Saving our lives.
Robert: But I want to go home!
Barbara: The last time we used the fast return switch we ended up facing the Daleks.
Robert: Then we take that risk!
Ian: Believe me, it's not a risk worth taking.
Robert: Oh yeah? And how do you know?!
The Doctor: I all think we need to take a breath.
Robert: And who asked you?! Who even are you - Doctor? Doctor Who?
Barbara: Robert! Enough! Go for a walk.
Robert: Where?
Ian: The cloister room or something I don't know! Just take a walk whilst we figure things out.
Robert: Is this what I am to you? A kid?!
Barbara: No! I-I didn't say t-
Robert: I'll 'go for a walk' & leave the 'grownups' to make a choice.
He storms out.
Barbara: Oh Ian, it's all gone wrong.
Ian: Hm, yes.
Barbara: Doctor? What on Earth are we to do?
The Doctor: What we are to do? My dear, that is unknown.
Barbara: Maybe we should just use the fast return switch. It could get us home.
Ian: But could also put is in grave danger.
The Doctor: Perhaps we could see Susan once more.
Ian: Doctor...
The Doctor: No no! I made my decision, I shall stick by it. Yes, I shall.
Barbara: You miss her, don't you?
The Doctor: Yes, I'm afraid so.
Ian: Well...
Barbara: Well what?
Ian: Maybe if we do return to Susan's time... it could be it for us.
Barbara: It?
Ian: Forever.
Barbara: Ian! You're seriously not suggesting we settle down in the future?! We have a life to go back to in 1963! Parents! Brothers! Sisters! We'd be reported missing, presumed dead! Do you really want that for our families?
Ian: I know, I suppose you're right, Barbara. But just think! Hey, Doctor! Maybe you could even settle down with us?
The Doctor: No... I will roam the universe.
Barbara: Why don't we just land the TARDIS & see if it's a civilised place & maybe we can talk things through with Robert, in a less confined, malevolent setting.
The Doctor: Quite right, quite right.
In the cloister room:
Robert is looking through his phone at past photos.
Ian: What's that?
Robert: A mobile phone.
Ian: Mobile phone?!
Robert: Yeah... I kinda forget you & Barbara are from another time.
Ian: There's us from the 60s & then you, from 2023 London!
Robert: Two completely different worlds.
Ian: Yes! So... this mobile phone? How does it work?
Robert: You just sort of have a go really.
Ian: You can take photographs on it?!
Robert: Yeah!
He shows Ian some photos.
-Me & my mum, me & my mate, Sam. Oh that's me & Alicia... my girlfriend.
Ian: Girlfriend eh?
Robert: I miss her.
Ian: I-I'm sorry, I didn't realise she had passed.
Robert: Oh no! She hasn't passed, I just miss her. It's been 2 years for us, for her it's been... god I don't even know.
Ian: In the TARDIS, time is relative. She could've seen you just hours ago from her point of view.
Robert: This life... in the TARDIS. It's so stressful but so addictive!
Ian laughs.
Ian: I've lost track of my days, Barbara kept a diary but she's lost track. We've been here for longer than a day anyway.
Robert: So... you & Barbara?
Ian: Hey?
Robert: What's the deal with you both?
Ian: How'd you mean?
Robert: Well... it is obvious that you fancy each other!
Ian: It is?
Robert: Yeah!
Ian: You got us! It's just we can never find the right time to get to talk & understand each other & work out what we are.
Robert: Right.
Ian: I just wish we had time to talk it through! We just seem to keep running from here to the next, never settling down anywhere for too long or we're constantly getting separated from each other or being chased by Daleks or Voord or Mim or Flying Monkeys.
Robert: Flying monkeys?!
Ian: The Doctor, Susan, Barbara & I once visited this world called Avalon, it was a fantasy world - castles & princes & princesses & witches... and flying monkeys.
They laugh.
Robert: Sometimes I think that I'm on some kind of random drugs trip! The things I have seen! Frogmen! Witches! Ghosts! Daleks! It's just so unbelievable! I just need to stop for a second & go 'what the hell'?
Ian: Yes, it does get like that.
Robert: Do you think you'll ever give it up one day?
Ian: How'd you mean?
Robert: Well, this life, do you ever think one day the next place you land will be where you get off?
Ian: I see it this way sometimes, I know I shouldn't but when the stakes are high & I am genuinely scared for my life, I do sometimes tell myself that this is it - the end of the line, this could be the day I die.
Robert: Maybe the next place we land will be London, 1963.
Ian: You know I often think that one day we might land in our own time & choose to actually stay in the TARDIS & move on, having a stable home & a job is great but this life it's fantastic, never in a million years as a young boy would I think that I'd be seeing the stars & meeting aliens & flying through history, I never thought that would ever happen, not ever!
Barbara comes in.
Barbara: Hello you two.
Ian: Barbara.
Robert: Hi.
Barbara: Oh Robert, I am sorry if I offended you in any way,
Robert: All water under the bridge.
The TARDIS begins to materialise.
Barbara: The Doctor believes that he's finally got us back to 1963 Shoreditch.
Ian: No way!
In The Console Room:
The Doctor: There! I think I should have the coordinates right!
He pulls a lever, Ian, Barbara & Robert come in.
-1963!
Barbara: I don't believe it.
Ian: We're finally home.
Robert: I guess this is it then. Goodbye Ian, Goodbye Barbara.
Barbara: Goodbye, Robert.
Ian: Bye Robert.
The Doctor: Chesterton! Ms Wright, I would like to thank you for all of the adventures that we have embarked on & I wish you a safe journey home.
The Doctor opens the doors.
In The Junkyard:
Earth:
Ian & Barbara step out.
Ian: I don't believe it! We're finally home!
Barbara: How long have we been gone?
Ian: Hm?
Barbara: That building.
Robert & The Doctor step out.
Robert: That's The Shard!
The Doctor: Oh dear.
Barbara: What?
Ian: Doctor?
Robert picks up a newspaper.
Robert: 31st December 2023. We're back in my own time, not yours.
Ian: Oh.
Robert: Maybe this is where my story ends.
