James Potter hates Mariya Seratova. He hates her sarcastic comments and her matter of fact way of speaking. He hates her because she stands for everything he despises - she is a Slytherin and clearly thinks that she is better than everyone else, she is smug and impossible to like. However, James Potter doesn't realise how easily hatred can turn to love and how everything that annoys you about a person can be everything that draws you to them.
Mariya Seratova finds James Potter amusing. She likes his pranks and the way he looks out for his friends, but doesn't like how instantly dismissive he is of anything different to himself. She can't understand why he seems to hate all Slytherins even though he has barely spoken to any of them, and she doesn't like the way teachers ignore his ridiculous behaviour towards the house simply because he is a model student and a member of the quidditch team.
Minerva McGonagall has watched both James and Mariya for many years and she knows that the two are meant for each other. She knows that Lily Evans has no intention of ever going out with the boy. She knows that, though James says he hates Mariya he is intrigued by her and she knows that Mariya is interested in getting to know James Potter better. Fortunately for the two of them, she has a plan. After all, their darling Minnie could be sneakier than any of them imagined.
