my cattle dog's running laps of the grazing plains,
chasing the four hooved animals closer to home.
my dog's coat matching that of the cattle's,
black & white splotches cover the fields,
nature's ying & yang.
until a bucket.
clings.
or a gun shoots.
bang.
the sun's rays settle below the hills,
i feel the breeze as it hits windmills;
the border of the fields that pay my bills.
we head inside,
my cattle dog & i.
he lays on top of me,
on the couch;
i don't mind.
his tail displays the excitement he can't hide,
but tired after a long day's working,
needing a rewind.
my cattle dog awakes at dawn,
i'm awoken by the rays shining through leaves of fawn,
the dews of frost thaw out
& the light reflects through.
my cattle dog knows the drill,
it's nothing new.
the day is the same,
day in & out;
we've no time to pout,
not by my account
but my cattle dog sprouts from the covers,
scratches the door
eager to explore the outdoors.
i hear the rain begin to pour,
from this side of the door,
he begs for more.
longing the outdoors
but i fear we'll be hit with a storm
but then stress over the jobs,
the chores.
i sigh as a reply.
i reach for the door,
he runs out in the pour
& i pray this weather won't be forevermore.
he runs the fields for miles & miles,
i smile.
i like seeing him happy,
wishing we could be like this all the time.
happy.
not sappy.
me more than him.
this is our lives;
rain or shine.
these land,
the house
& this dog;
it's all mine.
the rain's now being a pain;
halfway through our day.
the downpour silences the passing train,
i take the sign & look for my boy in the terrain.
my good boy comes out
no white coat showing.
the winds picked up blowing,
the rain overpouring.
we both start running,
shivering.
after a good clean up,
we're cuddling up on the couch again
with noses scrunched up
but i don't stay up;
though the rain keeps up
my good boy's still up.
