Pride

Within my heart there lies a seed,
A pride that grows with every deed,
I see myself as better than the rest,
My ego swells within my chest.

I stand above the common fray,
And deem myself above the fray,
My arrogance, my vanity,
Are all that I can ever see.

I cannot bear to be outdone,
And seek to shine, the only one,
I crave the spotlight, crave the fame,
And in my pride, I stake my claim.

But pride comes before a fall,
And soon I'll find I'm nothing at all,
For in my arrogance and conceit,
I've lost the things that make life sweet.

So let me shed this prideful boast,
And seek instead a humbler post,
For in humility, I'll find my way,
And prideful thoughts will fade away.
