  Nina's POV

I was doomed. We were doomed.

The doorknob rattled, making me scamper off the bed. I scrambled to yank the sheet higher, desperately wishing I could melt into the mattress and disappear. The thought of Kai walking in on this scene, of him seeing me like this, with Vince practically radiating barely contained lust, was unbearable.

Forcing myself to breathe, I feigned sleep, hoping he'd simply leave if I didn't respond. The handle jiggled again, followed by a soft knock.

"Nina?" Kai's voice drifted through the room.

Silence. My heart threatened to burst in my chest.

The handle turned, the door creaking. But it was locked. Thank goodness, Vince did one thing right. Locked the door so he wouldn't be caught screwing his stepdaughter. I wasn't sure whether to be relieved or repulsed by the thought.

"Nina, are you awake?" Kai's voice was closer now.

I squeezed my eyes shut, willing myself to disappear, to rewind time to before this moment, before Vince had stormed in, before the sheet had slipped, before I had felt those feelings.

  The door knob rattled again.

"Nina," he said again, his voice firm now. "Open the door."

My breath hitched. The simple command held an authority that sent shivers down my spine. He wasn't asking anymore.

"I... I'm really tired," I mumbled, my voice barely a whisper. "Can we talk in the morning?"

Silence. Then, the unmistakable click of the lock. My eyes flew open, a strangled gasp escaping my lips.

"If I want you to open the door, Nina," Kai's voice was cold, "then you will."

He wasn't asking. He was stating a fact. And in that moment, I knew that defiance, even the pretense of sleep, was futile. This was his father's house, and within its walls, his word was law. With a trembling hand, I reached for the edge of the sheet.

"Kai, please," I pleaded, my voice reeling with desperation. "Don't make me do this."

He chuckled. "Do what, Nina? Open a door in my own home?"

Vince, who had been pacing restlessly around the room, stopped abruptly, his jaw clenched.

"Open the door, Nina," he repeated, his voice  dangerous.

  "Nina! Open this damn door!"

We were barely clothed, a tangled mess of limbs. I was practically naked, and Vince was shirtless. The last thing we needed was Kai barging in and finding us like this.

Vince was infuriating with calmness. He sent me a pointed look. "Go, tell him to leave."

"He won't," I hissed back, my voice barely above a whisper. "He'll... he'll lose it if he sees us like this."

"Then make something up," Vince urged. "Tell him you're not feeling well, anything!"

I was at the peak of frustration. "Kai!" I yelled, my voice strained. "I'm... I'm changing! Give me a minute!"

Kai's angry shouts continued, his fists pounding on the door.

Vince's sigh echoed in the room.

"Damn it, Nina. I knew I shouldn't have come here." He said between shouts and whispers.

His words stung. My voice rose a notch above a whisper. "What do you mean you shouldn't have come? I didn't ask you to come here."

He scoffed. "Yeah, I came ony own accord, and maybe that was a mistake."

My heart hammered against my ribs, and my stomach burned in anger.

"Well, next time, think twice before you decide to come in here to screw your stepdaughter!"

The words escaped my lips before I could even finish processing the thought. He took a menacing step closer. My breath caught as his eyes raked over me, lingering on the exposed skin of my breasts. My cheeks burned as he swallowed hard.

I whipped my arms across myself. "Stop looking!"

His voice was a low growl. "Shut it, little wolf. You're a hypocrite. You were imagining me taking you just minutes ago, weren't you? Whimpering and moaning my name, begging for me to have you. Don't act like you don't like it."

  My face burned. "I-I don't!"

He leaned in closer, his voice a dangerous murmur. "And just so you know, nothing's stopping me from taking you right here and now. Not even Kai being outside. Except maybe my duty to your mother...my wife."

My breath hitched. The way he said it, the possessiveness in his voice, made me nauseous and stupidly excited. Who got a thrill from those kind of words?

Just then, Kai's voice cut through.

"Nina? Who are you talking to?"

My heart lurched. I spun around. "No one, Kai. Just... myself."

"Well, thanks to your lack of self-control, we're in this mess!" I shot back.

"Maybe I would have left sooner if you weren't already practically begging for it," he countered.

"Don't you dare blame me for your inability to control your urges!" I snapped.

"One more word, Nina," he growled, his eyes flashing with anger and barely controlled desire. "One more disrespectful outburst, and you'll be screaming my name so loud your lungs will give out and your legs will buckle beneath you."

  I gasped, shrilling away.

"Alright, alright," Vince sighed,  "Blaming each other won't help. We need a plan."

He scanned the cramped closet, his eyes falling on a small ventilation shaft near the ceiling.

Taking a deep breath, I forced myself to think clearly. Arguing with Vince wouldn't solve anything. And it most certainly would get me...punished. We needed a plan, and it had to be executed flawlessly.

With a forced smile, I turned to Vince. "Look," I said. "Kai will be in here any minute. Why don't you hide in the bathroom for now? Once he leaves, you can sneak out the back door."

He eyed me suspiciously, unconvinced. "Are you sure that will work?"

I rolled my eyes playfully. "Of course! Besides, if he does catch you, just tell him you were, uh, checking the water pressure in the shower. He'll never suspect a thing... especially not from his stepfather."

A tense chuckle escaped his lips. "Right. Because stepfathers are known for their frequent shower pressure inspections."

"Exactly!" I grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "Now scoot! And remember, keep it quiet. The last thing we need is Kai walking in on his stepfather 'inspecting' the water pressure while his stepdaughter is..." I trailed off.

  Naked.

I scrambled to throw on clothes. The cotton stuck to my clammy skin. Vince had vanished into the bathroom.

The doorknob rattled. The door swung open with a sickening thud, revealing Kai.

"There you are," he snarled, his voice a low growl that sent cold chills over my skin. Before I could even stammer a word, his hand shot out, wrapping around my throat with a vice-like grip. My breath hitched, the air instantly cut off.

"You think you can blah your mouth at me and get away with it?" Before I could even stammer a denial, his hand shot out, wrapping around my throat with a tight grip. My breath hitched, the air instantly cut off.

"Don't even get me started," he spat, his grip tightening. His other hand darted out, scooping up a handful of wriggling roaches from the jar. Roaches! Freaking Cockroaches! It's been days since I exchanged words with Kai and he has been planning a comeback? Holy shit!

He shoved the jar against my lips, the fetid smell of the insects assaulting my senses. "No, Kai, please!" I choked out, my voice barely a whisper.

He ignored my pleas, his grip tightening further. He forced the jar closer, the rim scraping against my teeth.

"This is what happens," he hissed, "when you forget your place. You called me weak. Now, you'll eat like the weak thing you think I am."

"You're insane!" I spat, the word barely escaping my constricted throat.

He only grinned wider. "Perhaps. But you'll learn to appreciate my brand of sanity soon enough."

I continued to wiggle against his grip, and with a strong heave, I managed to pry his hand loose for a fleeting moment. Gasping for air, I choked out, "You're a monster!"

He shoved the jar against my lips again, this time successfully forcing it open. The writhing insects spilled onto my tongue, their tiny legs skittering across my taste buds.

I gagged, fighting him with every pulse I had, but my struggles grew weaker, my body succumbing to the sheer terror and the overwhelming urge to breathe. One by one, the roaches disappeared down from the jar.

They could escape the jar, but they sure as hell couldn't pry lips open. I clenched my jaw, forming a barrier with my teeth. They wouldn't get past this one.

"Open your mouth, little bird," he purred. "These juicy cockroaches are just bursting with protein."

His fingers dug into my jaw, the grip making me whimper.

Kai shoved me against the wall, his hand clamped over my mouth. My heart pounded. Every part of me screamed to fight, to yell. But the image of Vince froze me. If mom came here, Vince wouldn't be safe. How could I tell mom? That her husband cornered me shirtless in there?
No way. Vince was just behind that door. He was the only reason I didn't explode.

"You called me a crybaby," he hissed. "Let's see if you cry when you have a mouthful of crunchy insects."

Tears pricked in my eyes. My body fought against him, bit his grip was way too strong.

"No!" I choked out, "Please, Kai, stop!"

He chuckled. "Oh, you'll swallow them, my little songbird. Every. Single. One."

With a sickening grin, he shoved the jar against my lips, the roaches spilling onto my tongue. Their tiny legs skittered against my insides.

Gagging, I tried to spit them out, but his fingers pinched my nostrils shut. My lungs burned from constriction. My throat tightened. They wouldn't get past this part.

"There you go," he mocked, as he pulled the jar away. "See? Not so bad, is it?"
