Snow

I've always been told that life will get better, one day, soon you'll see that's what they say.

Glass shatters on the floor.
Red wine stains the carpet.
No, not wine, blood.
My blood.
I lower my arms raised defensively in front of my face.
Covered, covered in blood.
The red liquid pools around my elbow and
Plip, plip, plip, plip.
Drop by drop, the blood falls away from me and onto the cream carpet.
I look back up at him,
It was a mistake.
His cold, calculating eyes now red with fury,
The crimson matching the blood on the floor.
He screams a slur of incomprehensible words.
The words falling out of his mouth before he can pick them up.
A word vomit of insults hurled at me like a spear.
I stare in shock,
Tidal waves of tears flowing from my eyes.
Why?
Why?
After everything,
Everything I did,
Everything we did,
Why?
He widens his eyes, as if
Realising what he's done.
He opens his mouth,
"Don't"
I do not give him time to respond before
I turn away and run out of the house,
He tries to grab my arm, I yank it away before he can.
The snow freezes my toes as I step into the woods,
I run and run and run until my legs give out.
I hear him yelling my name,
Over and over and over,
His screams pleading with desperation.
And then,
Silence...
...
...
...
Snap
