⩔ Ava ⩔
I glanced over at Bonita, standing on the opposite side of the hall. She was chatting with Tina Lang, who seemed to have been nominated for an Oscar last year...
Teo wanted to say something more to me, but I dismissed him and nudged past him through the crowd.
"Um, Bo, can I talk to you?" I asked, feeling awkward interrupting their conversation.
"Oh, Ava, sorry, I'm a bit busy right now. Let's chat later. There are lots of interesting people, talk to them," she said not even turning her head to me.
"Sure, absolutely. Sorry for interrupting!" I muttered.
I shuffled towards the exit, calling an Uber. My mom's beautiful shoes were rubbing against my heel. I took them off and walked barefoot.
In the car, I struggled to hold back tears. Libbie was right. I guess I thought I was cool now just because I slept with a famous woman.
As I stood there, tears streaming down my cheeks, I couldn't help but feel the weight of everything crashing down on me. I told her everything. My mom's comforting embrace was the only thing keeping me from completely falling apart. "Mom," I choked out between sobs, "I don't know what to do anymore."
She held me tighter, her voice soothing and warm, "It's okay, Ava. It's okay to not have all the answers right now. Sometimes life throws us curveballs, but we figure it out together."
I nodded, trying to compose myself. Just as I thought I couldn't handle any more emotional upheaval, a familiar figure appeared through the haze of my tears. "Libbie?" I whispered in disbelief.
She rushed over, her own eyes red-rimmed from crying. "I'm so sorry, Ava," she said, her voice trembling. "I was wrong to judge you and your choices. Can you forgive me?"
I blinked away tears, overwhelmed by the sincerity in her words. "Of course," I managed to say, my voice catching. "We're in this together, right?"
Libbie nodded, a small smile tugging at her lips. "Always."
Libbie and I sat together for a while, hugging each other as we said goodbye.
"I unfollowed her on all social media and blocked her," Libbie said proudly as she left the house.
"I didn't even know you were following her. And I don't think she noticed that you unfollowed her or anything," I said with a smile.
Libbie looked a bit embarrassed. "Everyone follows her. She's like Duolingo — you might not be learning a language, but you download the app to seem smart."
"I don't want to talk to her anymore, either. Not that she even noticed I left."
"She noticed," my mom called from the other room. "She called me. I gave her my number just in case yesterday. I got a bit caught up in her charisma and the fleeting desire to be an in-demand floral decorator."
"What did she say?" I asked hopefully.
"I told her to keep her minions in check and not to bother you or me again. She has her tour, cosmetics, books, or whatever? Let her go off with her rich crowd. God forbid we leak any information about her. She's no politician; who cares about her dirty laundry," she sniffed.
"Mom, maybe you shouldn't have —"
"She should come out of the closet before talking to you. She should have warned you about everything beforehand. She probably thought people like us would just be grateful that someone like her paid attention. Inviting you to such an event and then ignoring you? Unheard of."
"She was busy," I mumbled.
"Don't make excuses for her. She should have prepared you for everything or not invited you at all and then set up a private date later. You just started dating, and already there are so many awkward moments and jealous enemies. Classic media-rich woman behavior."
"I have to go, Ava. I'll call you tomorrow. I'm glad we talked about everything," said Libbie.
"We'll definitely answer the phone this time. Sorry for everything."
"No, I should be the one apologizing."
"Lovers come and go — friends stay forever."
"And moms," maman added.
"And moms," I agreed.
Libbie silently disagreed.
Mom squeezed both of us in a hug.
