"For being a paramedic you're an awful patient yourself."
—As you drive, you turn to the stranger and realise you don't know his name yet. "Yn." You introduce yourself.
"Gerry." He says, not looking at you and just concentrating on speeding out of the city.
You drive in silence for a while, just processing what just happened.
...
You had finally started to feel your heartbeat slow and adrenaline rush fading, when suddenly Gerry's phone rings, startling you. He picks it out of his pocket and hold it to his ear while driving. "Thierry. Where are you?"
"Airborne. Lower East Side to Turtle Bay. It's all gone. We barely made it out."
"What is this?"
"We don't know. How close were you?"
"Face to face." He says, glancing at you.
"Where are you?"
"95, heading north."
"Alright. We'll try to get a helicopter to you. I'll call you back with an extraction point. Can you hold out for another hour?"
"Do we have a choice?"
"This is not for old times sake, my friend. I'll need you. I need you back."
"Don't forget about us." Gerry then says.
"Us?"
Gerry look at you. You're looking out the window at what you just escaped from, seeing buildings on fire, smoke and helicopters flying over the city.
"Yeah, I have someone with me." He tells Thierry. "I crashed into her ambulance, we got out of the city together. If she wants, I'm taking her with me."
"What do you mean, we've lost Boston?" Thierry asks someone on the helicopter, before answering. "Alright. Good luck, Gerry."
He hangs up and reach his phone to you but you just shake your head, declining the offer to call someone. Putting it back in his pocket, you speak up before he gets the chance to ask.
"I'd like that." You say and he turns his head slightly to you, but still watch the road. "Sorry, your phone's volume was high, I didn't mean to overhear." You say, fiddling with your fingers on your lap.
"That's fine." He says softly.
"Only if it's not a burden. I don't want to be in your way. I just.. I don't really have anywhere to go." You don't really know what you're asking to join him, but you feel safe with him for now and since you actually don't know what else to do, this is your best option.
"You won't." He says and you raise an eyebrow at him. "Be in the way. I'm relieved you're coming. I feel horrible for crashing into you back there."
"Oh, don't be. I crashed too, I didn't see you. I mean, we both crashed. It was a mutual crashing." You cringe slightly at yourself sounding so nervous when you're actually just tired from the adrenaline wearing. You're reminding about the wound on your head as it starts to hurt more. He chuckles and glance at you just when you reach up to your wound and pull down the mirror above your seat.
"Oh! Your head. I completely forgot. How are you feeling? Maybe there's a med-kit or something around here." He says glancing behind him into the RV and around his seat.
"It's not that bad." You mumble, looking at it through the mirror above your seat.
"We need to clean it." He says, thinking you're not going to do anything about it. You chuckle softly and he looks at you.
"I know. Paramedic remember?" You smile at him as you get up from your seat and go further into the RV.
"Right." He replies in a chuckle. "I'll stop just by the road up ahead and help you." He says.
"No, I got it. We shouldn't stop." You tell him.
Looking around, you freeze when you open a cabinet to find a rifle. Pulling it out, you hold it up carefully to show Gerry.
"You know how to use this?" You ask and he looks at you through the mirror.
Nodding, he gestures for you to hand it to him. You do and he checks it over while driving. Not finding anything you could use to treat your wound, you sigh and go back to the front.
"Find something?" He asks when you come up behind him.
"Nothing." You sit back in your seat. As you do, you get hit with a headache and groan slightly in pain, clutching your head.
"You okay?"
"Yeah, just a headache from sitting down too fast." You reassure him.
You look at the wound again through the mirror and reach up to it. Gerry grabs your hand to stop you.
"Stop touching it. You know, for being a paramedic you're an awful patient yourself." He tells you and you can't help but laugh.
"I'll be fine, I'm sure they have something where we're going." You say, leaning back in your seat.
"Yeah, but we don't know where or when that might be. You could get an infection."
