"You don't know me, yet you've done so much for me."

An explosion go off and you stop running to duck on instinct. Someone fall from a building and on the car behind you. You jump and whip around. The man spasms and makes gurgling sounds. Gerry and you instinctively hold each other's hand tighter and back away from it. Turning back toward the apartment building, you start running again.

Getting inside, Gerry let go of your hand to pull up his rifle. Not seeing any threats inside for now, he turns back to the doors. He grabs the hose attached to the wall, tying it around the handles to barricade it.

Snarling and screeching is heard getting closer and you grab Gerry when you see the doors gets pushed in, but doesn't give in. At least not yet, it's gonna hold. You run up the stairs, hearing the door about to give in.

  "Keep running! To the top!"

Getting to one of the top levels, you close the door behind you. It's dark, so you grab one of the flares from Gerry's backpack and light it. Gerry finds a door locked and pull his rifle back, knocking it repeatedly until it breaks. But just before it does you see someone further down the hall.

"Hey!" You shout.

Gerry whip his head to you. The guy you saw had just run out of sight. You run down the hall after him.

"Yn!" Gerry shout and run after you.

You catch up and see the guy run into an apartment. You make sure Gerry is behind you and run up to the door, ignoring Gerry exclaiming for you, not having seen the man.

"Let us in! Hey! Please!" You bang on the door, and Gerry catch up to you just when the door opens and he hurriedly pulls you behind him. He looks at the man, a kid clutching to him and a woman further into the apartment.

"In. In!" Gerry pull you in front of him and push you hurriedly inside. The family backs away cautiously, letting you in. Gerry shut the door and even though the man lock the door, he finds something to barricade it with.

"Thank you so much." You tell them, walking further inside the apartment.

"I'm Thomas." The kid introduce himself.

"Hey, Thomas."

"My mom's cooking everything before it starts to stink."

"That's smart." Gerry say, walking over when you sit down on the couch. "You alright?" He asks you.

You nod, reaching up you give his hand a reassuring squeeze. He smiles softly down at you. The family speak Spanish to each other before Thomas address you again.

"Are you guys hungry?"

"Yes, thank you." You tell him.

Gerry see a radio and go to it.

"Senoria?" The man offer you a drink, which you accept it.

"Gracias." You thank him and he turns to offer Gerry one too.

"Senor?"

Gerry turn to him and take the drink, nodding in thanks before turning back to the radio. He gets the radio to a channel and stop it when he hears a voice speaking.

"The following message is transmitted at the request of the New Jersey State Police Department. Authorities recommend that the following actions should be taken by all members of the public. Stay indoors if at all possible. Have enough food and water, supplies for sheltering for one to two weeks. An unidentified virus strain is rapidly spreading across the state of New Jersey."

...

After listening to the radio and eating some, you get to stay but they only have the couch to offer. They hesitantly suggest that one of them could sleep on it and you two could take Thomas's bed. They are very hospitable people, but you don't burden the family too much in this unfortunate situation. You suggest to Gerry you share the couch. It's big enough for both of you. Though you would have to lay close to fit.

"If you have a girlfriend, I totally understand if you don't want to, we can ask for some blankets and pillows for the floor." You reassure him.

"No girlfriend." He shakes his head. "You?" After he asked, he realises it was unnecessary, since you had suggested sharing and said if he had a girlfriend you understood if he didn't want to share. So clearly you either didn't have a partner or didn't care to share anyway.

"Nope. No boyfriend." You turn to the family, telling them you'll be sharing the couch.

Gerry found himself frowning slightly to himself at how relieved he felt when you said you didn't have a boyfriend. The family say good night and you look at the couch, thinking about how you could both lay comfortably, but he thinks you regret sharing and get nervous.

"I'm sorry, if you find this awkward, I can just sleep on the floor." He suggests and you shake your head.

"Absolutely not, you won't be able to sleep on the floor. It's fine, really, I know we don't know each other but.. I trust you." You tell him. He looks at you for a moment, a bit surprised at your trust in him, but then smiles softly.

You gesture for him to lay down first and when he does, you lay beside him. The two of you shuffle for a moment before finding a position that works, but isn't very comfortable.

After a minute of both of you lying uncomfortable, he huffs and move his hand under you and move you around to lay toward him. The two of you now lying comfortably in each other's arms. You chuckle at the situation when he sighs contentedly.

"Thank you." You then say. "I don't think I've actually thanked you yet."

"You don't have to."

"You've saved my life multiple times today. And you didn't have to bring me along. A stranger. You don't know me, yet you've done so much for me."

He stares into your eyes, now getting a chance to really see you. "You've saved me today too."
