The next morning at breakfast, you sit at the staff table, enjoying a brief moment of calm before the day begins. Dumbledore approaches you with a serious expression. "Y/N, I need to inform you that Professor Lupin will be out for the rest of the week. He had a little accident."
You raise an eyebrow, concerned. "Is he alright?"
Dumbledore nods reassuringly. "He will be fine, but he needs time to recover. In the meantime, we need to make some adjustments to the teaching schedule."
Severus, seated beside you, immediately takes charge. "I will take over the Defense Against the Dark Arts classes," he announces. "Y/N, you will handle the Potions classes and follow the lesson plan I have laid out."
You feel a pang of disappointment. You already know where Lupin is in the lesson plan and how he has been running the class. It would make more sense for you to step in, but you keep your mouth shut. "Of course, Severus. I'll make sure everything goes smoothly."
Severus gives you a brief nod of approval. "Good. I trust you to handle it."
As the staff disperses to prepare for the day, you gather your materials and head to the Potions classroom. Despite your agreement, you can't help but feel a bit disheartened.
You wish you could have taken on the Defense Against the Dark Arts role yourself, knowing you are well-prepared for it. But you understand the importance of following Severus's plan and maintaining consistency for the students.
Throughout the day, you focus on the lesson plans Severus has meticulously prepared, ensuring that each class runs smoothly. The students are attentive and engaged, and you find a sense of satisfaction in seeing them grasp the concepts you're teaching, even if it's not the subject you hoped to be covering.
During a brief break between classes, you reflect on the situation. Despite your initial disappointment, you recognize the value of supporting Severus and ensuring that the students receive the best education possible. You also remind yourself that there will be other opportunities to expand your role.
As the day draws to a close, Severus meets you in the Potions classroom. "How did it go?" he asks, his tone measured.
"Everything went well," you reply, giving him a small smile. "The students were attentive, and I followed your lesson plans closely."
Severus nods, his expression slightly more relaxed. "Good. I taught them about werewolves and the dangers of encountering one today."
You raise an eyebrow, surprised. "But nocturnal creatures were weeks away in the lesson plan."
He meets your gaze steadily. "That may be, but it felt like an important lesson for today."
You hesitate, frustration bubbling up inside you. "Are you questioning my methods?" he asks, his tone sharp and defensive.
You take a deep breath, feeling the weight of the situation. As much as it currently pains you, you know this isn't the time to push back. "No, Severus. It's not my place."
He watches you for a moment, his eyes searching yours. "Good," he finally says, his tone softening slightly. "We have enough to deal with without questioning each other."
You nod, biting back your frustration. "I understand."
Severus's expression shifts, a hint of regret in his eyes. "I know this isn't easy for you, Y/N. I appreciate your understanding."
You take a deep breath, deciding to address the lingering concern. "Do you know what really happened to Lupin?"
He sighs, his expression darkening slightly. "I can only imagine. Given his condition, accidents are not uncommon."
