Ivy tiptoed carefully through her neighborhood. She looked over her shoulder every time she heard a creak or any noise ring out through the area. Her eyes scanned the houses around her, trying to discern which house was unoccupied by people.
The news had been filled with announcements from the military and the government to stay away from others and to lock up in your house. She was scared but she was hungrier. She needed to find food soon or she'd starve. It had been two weeks and her only meal had been a package of crackers she had rationed out to last longer.
She had decided to venture out in the cover of night hoping not to run into anyone. The streetlights helped light her path as she weaved between houses.
Ivy walked further into her neighborhood before finding a gray house with its door wide open. She paused thinking over the risks. If she went inside, there could possibly be some of those things in there but if she didn't she risked being caught in the open by anyone or anything.
A bottle rattling made her jump and her head swiveled around as she tried to find where the noise came from. A figure stumbled out from behind a house staggering towards her. She shuffled back in apprehensiveness trying to keep some distance between herself and the unknown figure.
Once the warm street lights lit up the stranger's face, Ivy gasped in shock at the amount of blood dripping down their mouth and neck. His hands were covered in the red substance staining the stranger's sleeves.
Another figure came out of the dark behind the man, it being a woman. She was limping, one of her feet being twisted at an odd angle and a kitchen knife sticking out her right leg. If part of her throat hadn't been missing, Ivy would've yelled out a warning about the dead man.
Iv turned and ran into the gray house not stopping to close the door. The two strangers ran after her faster than she thought they could, forcing her to run up the stairs of the unfamiliar house.
She tripped over a suitcase that had been left half-full on the stairs causing her to tumble down a couple steps. The man gained on her and he grasped her ankle tightly before pulling her towards him. Ivy kicked at him desperately watching as the woman made her way up the stairs as well.
The woman paid no attention to the man stumbling over his feet and landing closer to Ivy's figure. Ivy kicked the man's face causing her ankle to be freed from the man's grip and ran to the top of the stairs as he fell down the steps.
The woman was undeterred and followed her. Ivy panicked and ran into the first room she saw quickly locking the door behind her. She looked around the room hoping to find something to defend herself but came up empty.
She flinched hearing how the two dead ones slammed themselves against the door hoping to get to her. She walked over to the only window room and pried it open before climbing out onto the slanted roof. Her foot slipped but she managed to catch herself just before she went over the edge.
