"hey baby, is it alright if hunter comes over tonight for a fire?" karissa asks, sitting at the table eating pancakes.

"of course. you don't have to ask me, honey." you reply, softly.

"he's just got some shit he wants to talk about, i guess. so i'll be the supportive older sister and let him vent." karissa smiles, looking up at you.

"that's nice of you."

"well i think i'm nice. sometimes anyway."

"you are, baby."

"that's good to hear."

"yes ma'am."

"is he bringing the kids or just him?"

"just him, i think. he didn't say." she pauses before continuing. "him and bailey are going through it right now, so they might be with her. i just feel bad. he loves those kids so much, i'd hate to see that bitch tear them apart."

"i know. i'm sorry baby."

"hopefully they figure it out. we'll know more tonight."

"what should we do for dinner? i'll pick up a pizza?"

"yeah, that'll work."

"okay, perfect."

when dusk falls, hunter pulls in the driveway, and parks next to karissa's dodge 1500. you greet him at the door. his eyes were puffy, it looked like he'd been crying. he smelled of cheap whiskey and cigarettes. his jeans and boots, dirty and torn from work left behind sawdust as he walked through the house. in his hands, a bottle of pino noir.

"morgan?" he calls out, as you stand in the kitchen.

"hey!" you greet him near the table. "how are you doing?" you open your arms for a hug.

he hugs back, "i'm alright, honey. getting by, you know? yourself?" he holds out the bottle. "bought you a present."

you smile, looking at the bottle. "aw, thank you hunter. you didn't have to. i'm doing good."

"well, you know me." he cracks a small smile, breaking the somber mood.

"i think kay's out back, setting up the fire." you say, opening the sliding glass door, that oversees the backyard. "yeah, come on, she's out back."

hunter follows you down the stairs to the backyard.

"hey sis." hunter yells out.

"hey! how's it going?" karissa meets her brother, and they hug. she reaches for a twisted tea, and cracks the can. she passes one to her brother, than to you.

"you know, getting by. same shit, different day, you know?"

"i sure do." karissa replies, flicking her lighter. a small flame pops out of the top, and lights the pieces of newspaper in the fire pit.

"shit, look at you kay, started that up quick." hunter sits down next to you.

"didn't join the army for nothin, bud."

"lemme see that lighter." hunter holds out his hand. karissa passes the lighter to her brother. reaching into his pocket he pulls out a pack of marlboro cigarettes. he takes one out, and puts the pack away. holding it between his lips, he ignites the end of it.

"so do i gotta beat baileys ass again or what? teach that bitch a lesson. AGAIN." karissa says, sitting in a lawn chair across from her brother.

"she's just fucking stubborn." hunter says, drawing on his cigarette. "thinks it's her way or no way. i'm a 26 year old man. i can take care of myself. i can do what i want. she thinks that she can control me. and my babies, she damn well knows not to fuck around with me and my kids. because ill tell you what. nobody- not even she loves my babies like i do. they're my everything. she goes and she takes them away for a week, without even telling me until the day before."
