True Happiness (rewrite version)

The first chance

AN: This is happening in the bear hunter case. I hope you enjoy it!

Narrator pov. In the mushroom-picking mountains~

The detective boys and Agasa came to the mountains to pick some Matsutake mushrooms, their guide from the hotel they were staying at led them to the spot and explained the limit of mushrooms per child and adult and that when they were done, the hotel would cook the mushrooms for them.

The real kids happily agreed with that before the guide added about the metal fences and how they should pay attention to them since past them was the hunting area so they shouldn't go there.

Agasa questioned what the guide meant by hunting area so the guide explained how there were bears which scared the real kids along with Agasa before the guide reassured them that there weren't any on this side which made them sigh in relief.

After that, the guide left them to it and they started looking around for mushrooms.

Well, Genta was the most eager in looking and he complained how they didn't find any mushrooms despite how the guy at the hotel said that there was a lot here, practically digging up a lot of dirt and throwing it behind him.

Agasa reprimanded him for it and Ayumi just reminded how it was Genta who wanted to pick Matsutake mushrooms, as Ayumi herself wanted apples which started a conversation as Genta started to defend his choice by explaining how mushrooms were rarer and more expensive.

Haibara countered his point by talking about what apples are known to be and how they were more mysterious than Matsutake mushrooms, Mitsuhiko was now looking at her, which Irene noticed.

Ayumi happily teased Genta about how Haibara's point meant that Genta needed to eat a lot more apples which, of course, annoyed Genta.

And then Haibara said the input that made Mitsuhiko blush at her maturity and that was when Edogawa noticed and questioned him about it and so they had a conversation about Mitsuhiko's opinion of Haibara.

Ayumi looked around for more mushrooms and found some but Edogawa told her those were poisonous and then Genta complained again saying how there weren't any hints to find the Matsutake mushrooms with.

And that was when Edogawa shared his knowledge and found their first mushroom, calling it a culprit.

Mitsuhiko then spotted more pine trees with yellow-green needles which made the real kids excited and Ayumi ran to where Mitsuhiko was pointing and the rest except Genta followed.

They started finding more mushrooms, Irene ended up finding three and then Edogawa noticed how Genta was missing.

He asked if anyone else had seen him, and Haibara was the first to say that she hadn't for a while now, Irene just shook her head.

Ayumi and Mitsuhiko seemed to believe that Genta just simply went to do his business somewhere since he was drinking lots of water earlier but Agasa pointed out how even if that was true, which it wasn't, it wouldn't be good to get lost in this forest.

So they all went back to the place where they were before to try and find him.

When they were back by the first fence, Edogawa concluded that Genta climbed over it which worried Ayumi and Mitsuhiko as he explained how he came to that conclusion.

Agasa pointed out how, since Genta's badge was being repaired, they couldn't find him using Edogawa's tracking glasses which made Edogawa say that they had no choice but to look for him.

He added that he'd go there alone to find him while they all stayed here which made Ayumi and Mitsuhiko immediately protest, the latter calling Edogawa out for trying to take all the action again while the former said that they'd go looking too as they were all worried.

Edogawa nervously tried to remind them about what was on the other side before Haibara interjected, "In that case, why don't we do this?" 

Everyone looked at her as the next thing she said made Irene and Edogawa blink.

"Midorikawa-san and I will pair up." she said as she approached and stood next to Irene who let out a quiet, "Eh?" in slight surprise.

Haibara ignored that and continued, looking at Edogawa, "You and Yoshida-san pair up, and we'll search separately." Ayumi and Edogawa looked at each other before Haibara turned back to Agasa and Mitsuhiko and added, "And just in case Kojima-kun comes back on his own, Tsuburaya-kun and Hakase will stand by here."

She looked back at Edogawa and finished with, "Well? Isn't this better than you going by yourself?"

Agasa replied, "Y-You have a point but..."

Irene thought 'This is...'

It was obvious now, that Haibara was finally willing to give her a chance.

 She wasn't sure if that was because of how she did during the time Edogawa had amnesia, but she didn't care.

She wasn't going to let this chance go to waste, even if she didn't need to do much this time.

Edogawa warned the girls to be careful, reminding them of what was over the two fences, how hunters could easily mistake humans for wild animals, and how it often happened in Japan.

Haibara just carelessly thanked him for worrying, sounding sarcastic though Irene did say, "Arigato, we'll make sure to be careful." sounding more sincere but not by much since she only had slight colors.

Agasa then said to come back to this spot in one hour and that if they couldn't find Genta, they'd ask the hotel staff for help and then said to begin.

And so Edogawa and Irene climbed the first fence, both of them easily doing it, before helping their partners up and they got down on the other side, then split up.

This was her first chance given by Haibara, she'd make sure not to let it go to waste.

AN: Done! Hope you guys liked it!

Would you look at that, Ai finally gives Irene a chance to spend time alone with her, this time without Conan or Agasa. :D

This could be the opportunity for them to get closer! Hopefully, Irene doesn't mess it up.

Yeah, sorry, but the action will have to wait until the next chapter. Otherwise, this would get too long.
