(Keefe's POV)

"Foster?" I whispered tentatively as Sophie sat up. Her eyes scanned the room. Then they focused on me.

"Hello, Keefe." She replied.

Her voice sounded... Wrong.

Emotionless.

"Looks like I wasn't able to preserve joy..." Elwin whispered sadly. "I'm sorry, Keefe."

"Without joy, she's not... She's not Sophie anymore." I mumbled as Sophie kept staring at me. Like she was studying my features, considering if I was okay.

"Are you okay?" She asked. Her eyes still didn't show any emotion.

"Yeah... But I don't think you are." I said quietly. "My Empathy isn't picking up anything..." I sighed heavily and turned to Elwin. "I don't think she has concern, either. Are you sure you were able to keep some of her emotions?"

"Yes. I think I preserved... Five or six... I'm not exactly sure." Elwin admitted.

"Great." I grumbled. "Should we just make her feel every emotion and see if that tells us which ones she has?"

"Good idea." Elwin decided.

"Hey, Foster, what do you think about my hair?" I asked, mussing it a little bit. She blushed and hid behind her hair.

"Is that embarrassment or love?" Elwin asked. I blushed.

"According to my Empathy, it's embarrassment." I mumbled, kinda sad that it wasn't love.

"Okay, well that's a start..." Elwin said positively. "Keep doing your thing."

"How does the Neverseen make you feel?" I asked, touching her hand as her eyes narrowed.

"They should be pounded into the ground like squished mallowmelt." She growled.

"Anger." I said. Elwin wrote it down.

"What's banana plus banana?" I asked.

"Huh?" She asked.

"Confusion." Elwin jotted it down.

"What would you do if I died?" I asked quietly. Sophie's eyes turned sad.

"Keefe, I don't think I'd be able to keep going if that happened." She whispered. I swallowed the lump in my throat and choked out, "Sadness... Wait... There's no gentleness. That's weird."

"What do you mean?" Elwin asked.

"Usually sadness and gentleness go hand in hand with each other. That means she must not have it." I mumbled.

"So then what emotion is it if it's not sadness or gentleness?" Elwin questioned.

"Fear." I muttered. "Or maybe sympathy? Wait no, it's both..." I closed my eyes as I held Sophie's hand.

"I'm feeling fear. No sympathy. So there's one more, right?" I asked.

"Should be." Elwin mumbled.

Suddenly, I heard chimes outside the door. They were muffled, but they sounded beautiful. Edaline had taken up chimes as her calming instrument.

Sophie closed her eyes, looking peaceful as she smiled and listened carefully.

"Peace. Comfort. Joy..." Wait... I thought she couldn't feel joy?

"How can she feel all of those if there are only six?" Elwin mumbled.

"Check her cells. I dunno." I suggested.

Elwin pulled out all his orbs and gasped when he got to the purple one.

"What is it?" I asked eagerly.

"She has all her emotions..." He mumbled. But his tone didn't make it seem like that was a good thing.

"Then what's wrong?"

Elwin paused.

"All of her emotional cells transform every ten seconds in a random order. So one moment, she might be completely happy, and the next she could be terrified. But since it's random, she could feel the same emotion for a while and just be stuck there. If her emotional cells kept landing on... Fear, for example, she could end up being scared for an entire day. Or longer." Elwin admitted.

My jaw dropped. "How is that even possible?"

"Once again, Sophie continues to surprise me." Elwin muttered.

"Will she ever go back to normal?" I asked.

"I'm afraid not. That's why she'll need an Empath to stay by her side at all times. Like an emotional bodyguard." Elwin glanced at me knowingly.

"I'll do it." I said enthusiastically.

"Well..." Elwin hesitated. "You would have to be next to her at all times. Like Sandor. Are you sure you can do that?"

"Yep." I said with a nod. Elwin nodded back.

"Then all we have to do is give her a sedative so I can mute her emotions for a while and make sure she doesn't have any more Empathy abilities in her brain. Go home and shower, Keefe. Rest. I'll hail you when you start your job." Elwin assured me.

I realized how tired I was and mumbled, "Fine." Before I knew it, I was back home, asleep in my bed.

*Hope that was satisfying to have an update! It's been a busy week so it's nice to get back into writing.
