(Hehe this chapter is the opposite of chapter 42... Chapter 24. Get it?? I'm so funny 😆)

(Sorry for my cringiness... And sorry for not updating a lot lately... Enjoy!)

I basically leaped out of bed like a frog and sprinted to the mirror, fixing my hair quickly before I sped past my dad, slipping my green outfit on and reaching outside. Today was Sophie's planting.

I leaped to Foxfire and ran to the Healing Center, where I found Elwin tending to a girl I didn't recognize.

"Hey Elwin, can I talk to you?" I asked.

"Oh, uh, sure. Just give me a second." Elwin's smile looked pained, like looking at me reminded him of Sophie.

He finished bandaging the girl's leg and guided me to another room, closing the door behind him. "What's up?"

"Do you... Have Sophie's body? I know that sounds really creepy but... I might be able to bring her back." I whispered.

Elwin raised an eyebrow. "How?"

"I can restore her consciousness if I just have her body and go to that planting." I explained. "Sophie figured out how to preserve her consciousness. She tried so hard just to stay. We have to try."

Elwin nodded. "Well, I was just about to cremate her body... And I know that sounds really weird, but I was gonna give some of the ashes to her parents and some to you, so... Anyway, follow me."

He led me to the corner of the room, tapped on it strategically, and the floor opened up with some stairs. I raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything as I followed him down the stairs. It was freezing and dark until he turned on a light that was also a heater.

"This is where I cremate the bodies of..." His voice cracked. Tears were in his eyes. "She's over here."

On a metal bed laid Sophie, covered in a black cloth. "Okay... Can you keep an eye on her and make sure you don't cremate her? I need to get to that planting."

"Sure." Just before I was about to leave, Elwin called, "Hey Keefe?"

I turned. "Yes?"

"Bring her back for me, okay?"

"I promise."

I leaped to the Wanderling Woods, that form of completely silent sadness filling me.

I couldn't even hear the gravel under my feet as I walked deeper into the forest.

Sophie already had a tree planted, but the Council decided to plant another one, just to honor her real death.

Well, technically, this one wasn't real either. Because I was gonna bring her back.

I finally arrived at a large crowd of people, where Sophie's other tree stood. It was next to Dex's, and I could see him staring at both trees like he wished... Like he wished they were both there.

"You okay?" I whispered as I approached Dex. My Empathy overflowed with sadness from my best friend.

"Not really." He said, wiping his eyes quickly. "I can't believe she's gone."

"She's not." I said with a weak grin. Dex spun to look at me.

"Seriously?"

"Yep. Just wait."

Only that pure hope was keeping me going. So I was going to spread it with the others.

I gathered them all in a huddle, and even Biana stopped crying when I said, "I know how to bring her back."

"What??!" They all asked at the same time.

"We just need to get that hair-" I pointed to the blonde Sophie hair that Councillor Oralie was holding "-and take it to her body. I know it sounds crazy, but we have to trust Foster. She's way smarter than any of us."

"She told you?" Fitz asked.

"Yeah. It was a dream." I mumbled.

"Then how do we know it wasn't just your imagination?" Marella asked.

"We don't. But we have to try."

"How reassuring." Tam muttered.

*****

Me and the gang (yes, we are now called the gang) snuck up to the front, saying we wanted to give our condolences to Grady and Edaline, when we were really going to breach the Councillors security and steal the hair before they put us in Exile.

How does Foster plan like this all the time? It took me like five minutes and she can do it in five seconds...

Anyway, I told Dex to get in position. If we messed this up, we were probably done for. That was the last sample of the living Sophie. And it was the only thing that would bring her back.

Dex would throw the smoke bomb and Biana would sneak into the crowd of Councilors, past their bodyguards, and would grab the hair. Tam would cover Linh with shadows while she made it start to rain so people were extra distracted, and Biana would give the hair to me. Then I would escape from the smoke and bring it back to Sophie to give her life back while Marella yelled to the crowd, "Hey, the hair is gone!" Like she has no idea what happened. Then the gang would escape and reunite with Sophie and me before anyone realized what actually happened.

Easy peasy.

*****

Ten minutes later, I had the hair, and I was running out of the Wanderling Woods. I leaped to Foxfire as fast as I could.

I sprinted into the Healing Center and knocked on the wall just like Elwin had.

"Hey, I got the hair!" I shouted. Silence. I edged down the stairs and found a horrible sight. Elwin was tied in ropes with his mouth tied, and the Neverseen were standing over Sophie's body. All of them.

The trapdoor closed behind me. I was trapped.

"Why, hello, Keefe." Gisela whispered. "You've just brought me the last piece of my plan."
