"And that's exactly what I need to talk to you about".
Jungkook looked at Namjoon. There was something in Namjoon's tone that sent a pang of worry through him.
"What is it?" Jungkook asked, bracing himself for another blow.
Namjoon looked at him directly. The words he said next felt like a dagger to Jungkook's heart.
"It's been more than 24 hours since Anya's sepsis started. However, the medication is working, but her breathing is still not stable. So the specialist recommends putting her on a ventilator."
"Ventilator...?" The word hung in the air. Jungkook felt as if the world had shifted beneath him.
"I... I don't understand," he managed to say, his voice cracking. "I thought the medication was working?"
"It is," Namjoon said quickly. "But her breathing is not stable. The ventilator will help her breathe while the medication continues to fight the infection."
He paused, looking at Jungkook's stricken expression.
"It's a common procedure done in sepsis," he added gently. "And because her respiratory system is still weak. The ventilator will take over her breathing, giving her body time to heal, and reduce the chances of cardiac dysfunction."
"For how long will she need to be on it?" Jungkook asked, his mind racing.
The thought of Anya on a ventilator, unable to breathe on her own, was a horrifying one.
"It could be a few hours, a few days, could be a few weeks." Namjoon said. "It depends on her recovery."
The news hit Jungkook like a punch to the stomach. Weeks? Weeks on a ventilator? It felt like an eternity. He looked at Anya's still form, her chest rising and falling in shallow jerks.
"What if... what if she doesn't get better?" Jungkook whispered, voicing the question that had been eating at him since everything started.
Namjoon's face softened. "Jungkook..."
"No," Jungkook cut him off with a shake of his head. "I have to know. What's the worst that can happen?"
Namjoon sighed. He didn't want to give Jungkook false hope. "If the sepsis worsens, or she doesn't respond to treatment, there's a risk of multiple organ failure," he explained. "And in the worst-case scenario, she could..."
He couldn't bring himself to finish the sentence. They both knew what "the worst" was.
Jungkook felt like he was drowning. The room was spinning, the sound of the heart monitor seemed to drown out everything.
