Chapter fifty five

"The mockingjay symbol."

Things were quiet since then, where they had people swapping out shifts on the wall to make sure nobody snuck up on them, and when Glenn had mentioned to them how Jesus drew the mockingjay symbol on the wall, they all thought of one person, Katniss, where they all were keeping their eyes on her, which for Daryl meant keeping her by his side at all times, so she was standing with him in front of Denise and Rosita "after I got out of DC I just drove. I remember seeing it when I realized I had no idea where I was going. Edison's apothecary and boutique. It's just this little gift shop in a strip mall, but if it's really and apothecary, they had drugs." Denise shared.

"How do you know they still got em?" Daryl asked "it isn't that far. I just wanna check. And you and Rosita aren't out scavenging or pulling shifts." Denise shared, as Daryl nodded "we'll go." he told her "I wanted to check. I just wanted to help." Denise shared "have you ever even been out there?" Katniss asked "no." Denise told her "forget it." Daryl told her "I can ID the meds. I know how to use a machete now. I've seen roamers up close. I'm ready." Denise shared, as Daryl looked at Rosita "you good with this?" he asked "no." Rosita told him "I'll go alone, if I have to." Denise shared "and you'll die." Katniss told her "I'm asking you to make sure I don't." Denise shared, as Katniss and Daryl looked to Rosita "I'm not babysitting her by myself." Rosita shared.

Which is how the four of them ended up piled into an old truck, as Daryl kept switching gears, the truck kept jerking forward "I don't think you're doing it right." Katniss told him "how do you know?" Daryl asked her, as he switched gears again and again "I think you're disengaging it too soon. I've been driving stick since I was fifteen, usually beat up trucks like this. I mean, before..you know, before I left home." Denise shared, as the gears grinded again "my brother taught me, so I just know." Denise told them, as Daryl switched gears again, they continued to grind.

As they were heading down the road, a tree was knocked down in front of them "Daryl." Rosita said "yep." Daryl told her, slowing down, they came to a stop "stay here." Daryl said, looking at Katniss "both of you." he said, as he got out with Rosita, the two walked up to the tree, Denise looked at Katniss "so..you seem better. Better at least since the last time I saw you seeing as that was when you were crying because your boyfriend had been shot. Which is a perfectly normal response. I just..I'm used to the stories I've heard.." she shared, as Katniss looked to her with furrowed brows "stories?" she asked.

As the door then opened "come on, it's clear." Rosita said, as Katniss and Denise got out "what'd you find?" Denise asked "bottles of booze." Rosita told her, holding the bag up "any takers?" she asked "no thanks." Denise told her, as Daryl grabbed Katniss's bow and the three bags from the truck bed "for later. I'm not bringing these to the pantry." Rosita shared "I'm good. They were kind of my parents thing." Denise shared, getting out the map "which is why they aren't mine." she added on, as Daryl handed Katniss her bow and her bag, he tossed Rosita her bag "that truck ain't gonna make it past this tree. Come on, let's walk." he shared, walking ahead, Katniss followed him.

"Hold up." Denise said, as Daryl and Katniss stopped turning to her "looks like a straight shot if we follow the tracks." Denise shared, as Daryl and Katniss looked at them "no. No tracks. We'll take the road." Daryl shared, turning and walking toward's it, Katniss followed him "that's twice as far." Rosita told them, as Daryl turned around "go whichever way you like." he told them, looking at Katniss "come on." he told her, turning around and walking, Katniss followed him "we ain't taking no tracks." the two told them, as they headed up the hill.

Where Denise had followed after them, where as the three walked along the road, they soon met up with the train tracks, as Rosita was waiting there, she walked up to them "about time." she told them, as Daryl and Katniss continued walking, Rosita and Denise followed after them.
