Today, we reflect on a beautiful hadith narrated by Hudhayfah رضي الله عنه that provides insight into the supplications and practices of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ during night prayers.
Narrated by Hudhayfah:
While praying one night with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, I heard him say when he announced the opening prayer:
“Allah is the greatest, O possessor of power, dominion, grandeur, and might.”
In his bowing, he said: “Glory be to Allah the Almighty.”
When he raised his head from bowing, he proclaimed: “To my Lord is all praise. To my Lord is all praise,” and during prostration, he said: “Glory be to Allah the Exalted.”
Between the two prostrations, he said: “Lord, forgive me. Lord, forgive me.”
Hudhayfah then noted that the duration of the Prophet’s ﷺ standing, bowing, standing after bowing, prostrations, and supplications were nearly the same length.
(Sunan al-Nasa’i, Hadith Number 1069)
Benefits from the Hadith:
1. Variations of Duas in Prayer: This hadith illustrates the various supplications the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would recite during his prayers. The different phrases used in different positions (standing, bowing, and prostrating) highlight the richness of our tradition and the importance of diverse expressions of worship.
2. Humility and Submission: The repetition of duas, as exemplified by the Prophet ﷺ, demonstrates humility and a sincere attitude of submission to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ. It reminds us that humility in our prayers is essential for a deeper connection with our Creator.
As we strive to enhance our Tahajjud prayers, let us incorporate the beautiful supplications of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ into our own worship. May we emulate his dedication and humility in our nightly prayers and draw closer to Allah سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ through our sincere supplications.
Only the Allah Ta'ala knows best
