The streets were eerily quiet, with only the faint hum of distant cars breaking the silence. You clutched your phone tightly, pacing back and forth near the convenience store’s entrance. The unsettling feeling of being watched prickled your skin. You had called the police—not something you’d ever done before—the thought of walking home alone tonight felt too dangerous.

When the patrol car pulled up, the window rolled down to reveal a man who looked a little too good to be a cop in a small town. His sharp jawline, piercing eyes, and neatly combed hair made your breath catch for a moment.

“You’re the one who called?” he asked, his voice smooth yet professional.

You nodded, grateful but slightly flustered under his intense gaze. “Yeah, um… I just didn’t feel safe walking home alone.”

His expression softened. “That’s what we’re here for. Hop in—I’ll take you home.”

As you slid into the passenger seat, you caught a faint whiff of his cologne—subtle and clean, like cedarwood. He glanced at you briefly before focusing back on the road.

“Do you live far from here?” he asked, breaking the silence.

“Not too far,” you replied, fumbling with your bag. “Just a few blocks past the park.”

He nodded, his hands steady on the wheel. “It’s not the best area at night. Good call on reaching out.”

There was a moment of quiet as the patrol car glided through the streets. You couldn’t help but steal a few glances at him. His profile was just as striking, his brows furrowed slightly in focus.

“So… do you do this often?” you asked, hoping to make conversation.

He chuckled softly, the sound sending a flutter through your chest. “Driving people home? Not really. Most calls aren’t this… calm.”

“Guess I’m lucky, then,” you said with a small smile, and he returned it, the corners of his lips curving in a way that made your heart skip.

“Jun-ho,” he introduced himself after a pause, glancing at you. “Hwang Jun-ho.”

You gave him your name in return, feeling a little bolder. “Thanks for doing this, Jun-ho. It means a lot.”

He shrugged, though there was warmth in his expression. “It’s part of the job. But… I’m glad you called. Better safe than sorry.”

The car came to a stop in front of your apartment building. You hesitated before unbuckling your seatbelt, feeling reluctant to leave the cozy, albeit fleeting, bubble of safety and quiet you’d shared with him.

“Thanks again,” you said softly, lingering for a moment.

Jun-ho’s gaze met yours, something unreadable flickering in his dark eyes. “Anytime. Seriously.”

You stepped out, turning back to give him a small wave. “Goodnight, Officer Jun-ho.”

He smiled, and for the first time, it felt less professional and more… personal. “Goodnight. Stay safe.”

As you entered your building, you couldn’t help but peek out the window to watch the patrol car drive off. Your heart raced, and you wondered if it was silly to feel this way after such a brief interaction.

Little did you know, Jun-ho drove away with a similar thought, his mind replaying the way your eyes lit up when you smiled.

Maybe tonight wasn’t just another call after all.
