Song: The Sound of Silence by Simon and Garfunkel.
~She was afraid of heights, but she was much more afraid of never flying~
\\Chapter Five\\
His acrid stare pokes the demon inside of me, arousing his passion to shove little invisible needles into my fragile heart, hurting me steadily and painfully just the way he likes.
I cache any trespassing sign of emotion on my face as I make my way towards the table. Christopher seems to have the same plan, ridding himself from any gesture that may provoke the love I have buried deep down. I can't detect anything in his eyes just as dreadful emptiness clouds in his soul-absorbing blue eyes.
"Mr. Parks." I greet him.
"Hello, Arianna. Please just Christopher, after all we aren't strangers," he says as rings of anger form in his eyes but then quickly disappear.
I nod in agreement afraid that my voice might betray me. Unable to keep my trembling hands from his prying eyes.
A minute of awkward silence was enough to snap my fading calmness.
"Excuse me for asking, Christopher, but I was actually expecting to meet your father. May I know the reason why the sudden change of plans?" I question wearly.
"There was no change of plans. It was me from the beginning who you were supposed to meet." He looks at me with such coldness that sends a freezing shiver down my spine.
"Sorry. I guess my secretary gave me the wrong information."
"No, she didn't. She actually apprised you with my exact message. I didn't want you to know it was me," he replies as if reading my mind and answering my question.
"Pardon me, but may I know why you lied?" I press on that word knowing well that Christopher loathes liars. Something I had to learn about him the hard way.
He stares at me for a minute with a blank face, hands clapped together in front of his mouth, clearly studying my intentions.
"I want to talk to you privately. I feared you wouldn't come if you knew it was me. I want to reopen old files, so I hope you will cooperate."
"I won't," I spit venomously, sensing where he was heading with his little talk.
He looks a little bit taken back by my answer but he doesn't comment, allowing me to express my opinion on the matter.
He's testing me.
"Old things ended in the past, so there is no use in opening them again. It will only hinder our steps and progress, so Mr. Parks I won't discuss that with you. We have only business uniting us and that's it." I grab my bag and stand up without looking at him to make my way out.
But before I was beyond his reach, he grabs my hand painfully, stopping me from moving forward, and stares angrily at me. "Listen, Arianna." He presses on my name distastefully as if it creates an awful sore taste in his mouth. "I need to talk to you and you will hear me out. It includes our business together, so you have to understand that I am doing this not because I'm still too fond of our ugly past, but because it's important to detach this issue from our work. And believe me when I say this is the last time I intend to do it."
