In season five, Dawn is revealed to be the Key, a mystical ball of energy that would be able to stop the apocalypse. She was hunted by Glory, so the monks that protected the Key turned her into a girl and sent her to Buffy as a sister, knowing that she would be protected. Everyone's mind was filled with memories of Dawn, as if she had been around then her whole life. She finds out she's the Key from Buffy, and cuts her wrist in shock. Meanwhile, Glory is sucking out the sanity of random people, and Dawn realizes these people know she is the Key. Tara is a victim, and Glory realizes she is the Key when Tara accidentally mentions it. However, when the apocalypse finally comes, Buffy sacrifices herself, although Dawn tries to convince her otherwise. The apocalypse is over, but Dawn stays.
