And then there was the new hire—loud, reckless, golden-hearted. He showed up five minutes late on day one, holding two coffees and wearing an apologetic grin.
“You’re late,” the CEO snapped, not even glancing up from his desk.
“Traffic. But I brought you coffee. Black, no sugar. Same as your soul?”
That should’ve been the first strike. It wasn’t.
At first, every interaction felt like a battle. One pushing walls up, the other trying to peek over them.
“You smile too much,” came the complaint one afternoon.
“And you don’t smile at all,” came the reply, gentle, teasing. “We balance each other out.”
He didn’t want balance. He wanted control. But the sunshine refused to dim.
“You filed this wrong.”
“Oops.”
“You do this just to annoy me.”
“Maybe I do it to get your attention.”
“You already have it. Unfortunately.”
It was always like this. Bickering that tasted too much like flirting. Accidental hand touches. Lingering glances in the glass of office windows. And then the fight happened. A real one. Words said too loud, in front of too many.
“You don’t belong here,” he said.
The smile dropped. For the first time, sunshine looked like rain.
“I don’t belong with you or I don’t belong in your perfect cold little world?”
He didn’t answer.
“You’re scared,” the younger one whispered. “Not of me. Of the fact that you feel.”
And that was true. He felt too much. Wanted too much. But his past was filled with bruises. People who left. People he pushed away before they could.
“I warned you,” he muttered days later when they met again in the breakroom, both pretending they weren’t breaking.
“And I chose you anyway,” came the soft reply.
For weeks, he avoided. Ghosted. Hid behind meetings and reports.
“You left me waiting.”
“I didn’t ask you to wait.”
“I would’ve waited forever.”
Silence. Heavy. Honest.
“I don’t know how to do this,” he confessed, voice hoarse.
“Then we’ll learn together.”
Some people melt ice with heat. Others with patience. Sunshine doesn’t ask winter to change—it simply stays, until even the frost can't help but warm.
“I’ll hurt you.”
“Then I’ll stay hurt. But I’ll stay.”
“…Why?”
“Because you’re worth the healing.”
He didn’t believe it then. But when soft lips met trembling ones for the first time, something inside him shifted. The walls didn’t crumble all at once—but they cracked. Enough to let light in.
