"I vow patience, honesty, and adoring love as long as we both shall live . . ."

The words echoed in her head like a haunting mantra, her voice mixed with his in a chilling chant of empty promises. It was to be their wedding day, mere hours until they became husband and wife. However, she was keeping a dangerous secret from him, one that was life-threatening. Her patience with him was running thin lately, and she wasn't being completely honest with him, either. She was afraid he would eventually discover what she truly was; their love for each other would then cease to exist.

Katrina had to harbor the mistake of marriage in the depth of her mind so as to please her father. She knew that her marriage with Arcangelo wouldn't last, but the absolute joy radiating on her father's face prevented her from speaking a word of negativity. He was proud of the young woman she had become, how she managed to control her episodes, even though he was unaware of her urge to rip his limbs apart with her fangs.

For this day alone, she would try to forget that she was a vampire. Just for one day, she would try her hardest to ignore the surrounding noises that overwhelmed her senses, especially the sound of beating hearts. But a single day wouldn't make a difference, whether she was newly turned or not. She could not escape her life as a vampire.

It was said that a bride on her wedding day made her the most beautiful beyond comparison. Whether it was the feathery white of her dress or the radiance of her smile, there was something about her that outshined everyone else on her special day. The female Salvatore wanted to experience that feeling, but for whatever reason, she felt no genuine beauty.

Giuseppe couldn't afford to purchase a wedding dress, or so she was told, which resulted in her choosing one of her own white dresses she had stored in her closet. The sheer outer fabric hid a foundation lining of white cotton, and the skirt waistband left her barely any room to breathe. The sleeves were medium length, with loose cuffs on the ends, a floral pattern embroidered as a finishing touch. Her shoes, simple 3-inch heels colored the same as her dress, made her look somewhat taller. Even with the makeup that supposedly enhanced her beauty, she felt like an imposter.

Her nerves overpowered every other emotion, so as she walked beside her father, she felt as though her legs would suddenly give out. It was to be a very small ceremony, with only close family being present and the local priest to officiate, but every step she took was a step closer to a future she didn't want. She loved Arcangelo, though it wasn't enough to spend a lifetime with him. He was bound to find out about her, and when he did, she had to commit the unthinkable to protect herself.
