Newt's POV
Despite the Wraith being in the city, nothing happened for days. The city lingered on the brink of civil war as the tension and anticipation for what was to come grew the longer she lay in wait. What exactly she was waiting for, we didn't know. The encounter with her had told us one thing, she was becoming more unstable.
Remy Lee and Kai were in the city and had been for some time. Their common goal of wanting the Wraith dead didn't appear to have united them. Whether that was good or bad was debatable.
The rebels were busy constructing a wall right down the middle of the city out of everything they could find. Everyone joined in on its construction, happy to keep Wicked out. In addition to them were the growing numbers of the Wraith's—or Wrath as they called her—cult. Harvey warned us to avoid them, mentioning their cruel treatment of those who didn't share their views.
One afternoon, we got dragged along by Harvey—all of us except Felix who was spending time with Callia—on his way to the underground storage halls. On the way, he explained how they had been infested with Cranks during Wicked's take over, but had since been cleared. In them were storage containers of wire and other building supplies that could be used for fortifying the new wall.
"Remember," Harvey said as we piled in the elevator, "keep aware of your surroundings at all times."
"You okay?" Fry asked, nudging my arm gently. "You're spacing out again."
I sighed and dragged a hand over my face. "Just tired."
He shared a look with Tommy but didn't push it.
"That's it, just pile it on there," Harvey said, helping us load the wire onto the forklift.
The storage containers had originally been lowered down on platforms from the surface, which was where we were currently piling the materials. Four enormous metal poles went up to the ceiling far above, providing a track for the platform to follow back up.
Already, I was sweating despite the stale cold air and more worn out. My leg ached in protest when we lowered the wire on the front of it. The amount of movement was not helping ease the build up of fatigue and pain from the past days.
Harvey's eyes snapped to the darkness and stayed there,
We had set up lights in a wide circle around where we were working, but it did little to light up the rest of the dark space and the gaps between containers. Anything could be lurking just a dozen metres away and we wouldn't be any wiser.
Harvey put his hands on Fry and my backs and guided us back to the others. "Get ready to run."
His face began to warp, bones shifting and the scars fading. A few seconds later, my own face stared back at me. On the other side of Harvey was another me.
Illusions. The Wraith was near.
Harvey had cast illusions over all of us, turning everyone into me.
"Split up and get back to the elevators," Harvey murmured as soon as we reached the confused others. "She's here."
A Newt slipped out of the dark and joined me in creeping back to the elevator. Harvey had already told us where the other exits were in case of an emergency. I didn't dare go back to the one we came through. The overhead emergency lighting glowed a dull red, proving the barest amount of light to see by.
The Newt tapped my shoulder and pointed. Over the top of the next crate we could see the faint green glow of an exit sign. His hand clamped around mine, trembling violently.
