Awake

I was completely and utterly awake. Granted I had only gotten two hours of sleep but I was ready for today. Class started in ten minutes. I packed up my bags and threw on a sweatshirt and leggings. I was about as basic as a white girl could get, but with college came lower expectations. The walk from my apartment to my class was actually quite long but I always managed to scramble into class on time.
After my first class of the day I had nothing to do for a few hours. My next class wasn't until noon, simply because all the classes the school offered didn't interest me. I generally took this free time to go and read a book in the schools library but today I decided to change my routine up a little bit.

I climbed onto the shuttle they offered here to the students and made my way to the local grocery store. I didn't really need to buy anything in particular, but sometimes it was just nice to come out and look. I wasn't really an impulsive shopper but sometimes I do give into self indulgence. I walked into the store and immediately headed for the sweets aisle. When I emerged about five minutes later my shopping cart was filled with candy. When I finally felt satisfied with my purchases I made my way to self checkout. I didn't really like dealing with people at registers simply because not all of them turn out to be nice. As I made my way to self checkout I saw a sign that read, 'closed today'.
"Shit" I muttered under my breath. Looks like I'm gonna have to have some human interaction today after all.

I made my way to the check out line. I started working out in my head which one would take the longest. 'There are four people at aisle five and only two at aisle one, but the guy at aisle five seems to be moving faster.' I just kept repeating this in my head, but before I could make a decision a new aisle opened up. Since I was the person in the back it generally meant I would start the new aisle and I began to make my way over. It wasn't long until I realized Daniel was the check out guy. My life sounded like a bad cliché because it really was. I was about to turn around and get back in line for the other aisle when he finally looked up and saw me.

"Fancy seeing you here" he said.

Oh I hated how arrogant he sounded.
"Hi" I replied. It was only then I realized he was going to have to see all the junk I was buying. I don't know why this bothered me so much but I became paranoid.
"Are you okay? You look like you're about to pass out" he said with genuine concern. At least I think it was genuine.
"Just fine. Can you please just check me out?" As soon as I said it I realized how bad it sounded.
"I already have been" was his only response.
At first I thought he meant it in an idiotic boy way, but I had realized then that in the time I panicked over him seeing my purchases, he had already scanned them all.
"Oh, I'm sorry I wasn't paying attention."
"You don't seem to pay attention a lot considering we met because you ran into me." He said it as if ticking items off a list. For some reason this didn't stick well with me.
"Well you aren't even worth paying attention to." As soon as I had said it I realized how untrue it was and how much I wish I didn't say anything. Daniel looked genuinely shocked. I am a very empathetic person and I realized how harsh I truly was.
"I'm sorry Daniel I didn't mean that"
"It's fine Skye. You need to leave though I do have a job to do."
He didn't make eye contact with me once as he spoke. I could see the turmoil he had fallen into within his mind. I knew that look well enough. I didn't know if I should say goodbye or not, so I simply left with my bags in tow.
This is why I don't break routine.
