Justin Drew Bieber (/ˈbiːbər/; born March 1, 1994)[3][4] is a Canadian singer and songwriter. Bieber released his debut EP, My World, in late 2009. It has been certified platinum in the United States. He became the first artist to have seven songs from a debut record to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.[5] Bieber released his first full-length studio album, My World 2.0, in 2010. It debuted at or near number one in several countries and was certified platinum in the United States. It was preceded by the single, "Baby", which is also, as of 2015, the YouTube video with the most dislikes.[6] He followed up the release of his debut album with his first headlining tour, the My World Tour, the remix album titled, My Worlds Acoustic, and Never Say Never - The Remixes, and the 3D biopic-concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Bieber released his second studio album, Under the Mistletoe, in November 2011, when it debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Bieber released his third studio album, Believe, in 2012. Bieber's fourth studio album Purpose is scheduled to be released in November 2015, preceded by his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, "What Do You Mean".

He has won numerous fan-voted awards, including American Music Award for Artist of the Year in 2010 and 2012. His fan base, dubbed "beliebers", largely consist of early to mid-adolescent women. He was listed three times by Forbes magazine as one of the top ten most powerful celebrities in the world in 2011, 2012, and 2013.[7][8][9]

Early life

Bieber was born on March 1, 1994, in London, Ontario, at St Joseph's Hospital,[10] and was raised in Stratford, Ontario.[11] He is the only child of Jeremy Jack Bieber and Patricia "Pattie" Mallette. Bieber's parents were never married.[12] Pattie raised her son with the help of her mother, Diane, and stepfather, Bruce.[13] His mother is of French-Canadian descent; his paternal great-grandfather was of German ancestry, and his other roots are English and Irish.[14][15][16] He has also stated that he believes that he has some undetermined Aboriginal Canadian ancestry.[17]

Through Jeremy, Bieber has two younger half-siblings, Jazmyn (born 2009) and Jaxon (born 2010).[18] Pattie worked a series of low-paying office jobs, raising Bieber as a single mother in low-income housing. Bieber has maintained contact with his father.[19]

Bieber attended a French-language immersion elementary school in Stratford, the Jeanne Sauvé Catholic School.[13] Growing up, he learned to play the piano, drums, guitar, and trumpet.[11][20] He graduated from high school in Stratford, Ontario, the St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in 2012[21] with a 4,0 GPA.[22] In early 2007, aged 12, Bieber sang Ne-Yo's "So Sick" for a local singing competition in Stratford and was placed second.[20][23] Mallette posted a video of the performance on YouTube for their family and friends to see. She continued to upload videos of Bieber singing covers of various R&B songs, and Bieber's popularity on the site grew.[24
