The powerful force turned out to be something that I truly had not expected. Nico. He was trying to bring me back to life by allying himself with King Minos. Everyone in Elysium knew that it wouldn’t work. Everyone knew that Minos just wanted to come back to life himself. Eventually, I convinced Nico of that, and he stopped hating Percy.

A year passed, or at least, that was what we were told. Today was my first death day. All of the inhabitants of Elysium celebrated with a huge barbecue.

“Congratulations!” Zoe shouted from behind me, “You can try for rebirth now!” As she said this, all of my new friends, including Akira, a Roman demigod, and Katia, a mortal who could see through the Mist, brought out a triple-layered chocolate cake that was hot pink. Little maroon icing roses circled each layer. A single candle was centered in the middle with iced writing saying, “Happy First Death Day, Bianca!” It was delicious.

The next day, I walked over to the judge’s tent where I was to sign up for rebirth. Inside of the tent was a judge who was supervising and answering questions, and a piece of paper and a pen. There were two columns. One read, “Full rebirth,” the other read, “Half rebirth.” The judge supervising the sign up sheets reported in a monotone voice as if he had made this speech too many times, “Please choose between half rebirth and full rebirth. Full rebirth is when you become an entire new person. Half rebirth is like coming back to life. Half rebirth is only for those who left many loved ones behind or lives are worthy enough to continue.  If you do not apply for the type of rebirth you have chosen, you must wait another year to try again. When you have decided, mark an ‘X’ next to your name in the column of the type of rebirth you have chosen.”

I had no idea which one I would choose. I would rather come back to life, and maybe explain to Nico why I had sacrificed myself. I could also become a Hunter again. I asked the judge, “If I choose half rebirth, will I automatically be a Hunter again?”

“No. You will be a demigod, because that’s what you were from birth, but when you die, the Huntress Oath dies with you,” he answered, sounding somewhat more interested.

Cool! I thought to myself, I can have a boyfriend when, no if, I choose half rebirth. But, if I chose half rebirth, and was rejected, I would have to wait another year to get the chance to be reborn.

Should I choose half rebirth?

Or full rebirth?

Half rebirth?

Full rebirth?

Half?

Full?

Which one is the best choice?

I stood in the tent for what seemed like years. At last, I had made my decision. My hand picked up the pen and wrote my name in the name column. It hovered over full rebirth, yet subconsciously it jerked over to half rebirth. The pen came crashing down onto the paper, and I was signed up for half rebirth.

Days went by. Weeks too. A few souls went though and got to go back to life. A few more souls joined Elysium. I still had not yet heard from the judges. Weeks went by. Months too. I was almost sure that I was not going to be accepted for half rebirth. I was almost sure that I had made the wrong choice. Almost.

The next day, I received a letter from the judges. Alecto herself came to deliver it. I broke the seal, unfolded the paper, and screamed.
