I wake up and feel groggy, “Jenna?”
I feel around for a clock or a table. I look up and see the room is dark and I finally see the glowing numbers. It’s five in the morning, “Jenna, you awake?”
Jenna calls, “Hey you’re finally awake.”
I see her sitting on the ground on the computer. “Finally?”
“Remember vampires don’t sleep, so I’ve been bored.”
I laugh, “It’s five in the morning…wait a second!”
Jenna jumps, “What?”
“When you spent the night what did you do?”
Jenna laughs and holds her stomach from laughing so hard, “Oh, yeah I went out and helped my father hunt.”
I swallow, “Hunt…you mean?”
Jenna looks at me and shakes her head, “No, we don’t hurt humans. We aren’t like that. We were once humans too.”
I apologize, “I’m sorry I didn’t mean to offend you.”
Jenna smiles, “It’s fine, we feed off of animal blood, and like I told you, we can go to about a year without feeding. We grow very weak as you saw if we don’t but we survive.”
I think for a minute, “You have fangs?”
Jenna looks at me, “No we grow butterfly wings and fly to happy world.”
“Sorry.”
“I’m just playing with you. I’ll show you.”
Jenna sits next to me on the bed and opens her mouth, I watch as her teeth grow and fangs appear. I smile, “I doubt it…but do you have anything a human can eat? I’m starving.”
Jenna closes her mouth and nods, “Of course, we got some food while you were asleep.”
“Really?”
Jenna gets up and motions for me to follow, “Of course. There’s a reason stores do 24 hour service these days.”
“Vampires?”
“Yep!”
I follow her; her house was so clean and beautiful. Everything was so modern, “You’re house is amazing.”
Jenna smiles, “Thanks, what would you like to eat?”
I look at her house and see they did more than stock up on a little food, “Your kitchen is a grocery.”
Jenna laughs, “Well never having to spend money on things helps a lot.”
I grab some cereal and milk and pour it into a crystal bowl. While eating I ask, “So, what can vampires do? Enlighten me.”
Jenna giggles and then stands up, “Well we don’t sleep, so we never get tired.”
I raise my hand and she looks around the kitchen and finally stops on me, “Yes Ms. Parks?”
I try not to laugh, “Why is it that vampires never tire?”
“Simple, unlike humans that need food and energy to keep their organs going, we are immortal so with that we never tire.”
“Can you kill a vampire?”
Jenna looks at me for a minute and then nods, “Yes, yes you can.”
I wait for her to explain and she sits down on the bar stool next to me, “It’s not anything like you see in movies or read in the books. There’s only one way you can kill a vampire.”
